Cloud County Softball Team Sweeps McPherson College JV in Road Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Cloud County Community College softball team swept their doubleheader with McPherson College JV at Bulldog Park in McPherson, Kansas on Tuesday, April 14. After pulling away from the Bulldogs in game one by a final score of 20-11, Cloud County captured a 14-2 run-rule victory in five innings in game two.

Cloud County has climbed back to .500 at 13-13 on the season.

The T-Birds hung 20 runs on an opponent for the first time since March 2021 in their 20-11 game one win.

Cloud County plated 11 runs through the first three innings.

Freshman Brooke Lougheed led off the game with a home run, while freshman Maddie Harold provided a RBI double and sophomore Emalee Johnson drove in three runs on a triple to give the T-Birds a 5-0 lead.

After Lougheed led off the second inning with a triple, sophomore Berkleigh Curtis drilled a two-run home run for her second long ball of the year. Harold added another run-scoring double and later scored on a base-hit by freshman Morgan Williams to make it 9-3.

Cloud County added two more runs in the third when Curtis doubled to bring home Lougheed, followed by Harold driving in Curtis on a RBI single to make it 11-3.

McPherson College JV began to pull back into the game, starting with one run in the third and two more in the fourth to cut the deficit to 11-6.

Curtis scored on a RBI ground out by Harold, and sophomore Maliyah Koster raced home on a RBI fly out by Williams to extend the T-Birds' lead to 13-6 in the fifth.

The Bulldogs responded with a five-run sixth inning, aided by multiple defensive errors on the T-Birds, to pull back to within two runs at 13-11. McPherson scored eight unearned runs thanks to six defensive errors on the T-Birds in the ballgame.

Cloud County blew the game open again with seven runs in the seventh. Harold scored when sophomore Bella Santin reached on an error. Freshman Hannah Gardner was brought home when freshman Ava Boden was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded. A double by Lougheed scored Santin and freshman Jaci Vonlintel, while another double by Curtis drove in Boden and Lougheed for the final runs of the contest.

Curtis scored five times in the game and finished 4-for-5 at the plate with five RBI. All four of Curtis' hits went for extra-bases. Curtis, who also stole two bases in the win, currently leads the team with 12 doubles and 12 stolen bases.

Lougheed finished one hit shy of the cycle. Lougheed went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and a home run. She also scored four runs while adding three RBI.

Harold went 3-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored and four RBI. Harold added one stolen base.

Cloud County ended with a season-high 17 hits, surpassing their previous-high of 16 hits recorded in a 10-9 loss at Northern Oklahoma College-Enid on March 12. The T-Birds also amassed 19 RBI, the most for the program under head coach TJ Segebart.

Two different pitchers threw in the game for Cloud County. Williams picked up the win, pitching six innings and allowing just three earned runs on 10 hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Harold closed the game in the seventh, allowing no runs on one hit with no walks and three strikeouts.

The T-Birds then rolled past McPherson College JV 14-2 in five innings in game two.

Cloud County jumped on the Bulldogs early, scoring five runs in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Kendal Ratzlaff drove in a pair of runs on a one-out single. Ratzlaff later scored on a sacrifice fly by Lougheed, while Curtis belted her second home run of the doubleheader on a two-run shot to give the T-Birds a 5-1 lead.

The T-Birds stretched the lead with two runs in the third, four runs in the fourth and three more runs in the fifth. Freshman Kadence Hall had a RBI triple in the third, while sophomore Hailey Garcia recorded a RBI double. Freshman Emily Carver doubled to score two runs in the fourth, while Ratzlaff added a RBI single. Vonlintel picked up a RBI double in the fifth, and Hall capped the scoring by driving in a pair of runs with a two-out fifth inning single.

Hall went 2-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored and four RBI. Ratzlaff finished 2-for-3 with one run scored and three RBI. Garcia and Vonlintel also had two hits apiece.

Curtis earned her first win in the circle, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts in four innings of action. Boden threw the fifth, giving up one run on two hits while striking out one.

Cloud County returns home to host Kansas City Kansas Community College in a Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) doubleheader on Thursday, April 16 at 1 pm.
