Leila Washington each scored 19 points as the Cloud County Community College women's basketball team pushed No. 2 Butler Community College into a late second-half battle before falling 73-60 in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) play on Saturday, February 28.
With the loss, the T-Birds move to 13-15 overall and 9-14 in KJCCC action.
Cloud County fell behind by nine points early in the first quarter before closing out the period on a 10-4 run to trail 17-14. The deficit never grew bigger than seven points in the second frame. Washington capped a late 7-0 run by the T-Birds with a basket in the paint, knotting the game at 30 with less than a minute to go before halftime. Butler sophomore guard Ashley Singhateh answered with a layup on the other end of the floor to give the Grizzlies a 32-20 advantage at the intermission.

Marilyn Soeken buried a three-pointer to tie the game at 33 at the 9:09 mark. The T-Birds were limited to just 1-of-8 shooting from behind the arc and 3-of-15 from the field in the third quarter. The Grizzlies outscored the T-Birds 16-9 in the quarter to lead 48-39 entering the fourth.
A pair of free-throws by sophomore guard Destiny Smith gave Butler its first double-digit lead of the game at 50-39 with 9:20 to go. The T-Birds did a great job executing offensively in the final quarter, logging 21 points while shooting over 61 percent from the floor over the final ten minutes. But Butler matched Cloud County, scoring 25 points with three made three-pointers and shooting 8-of-10 from the free-throw line to ultimately keep the contest out of the T-Birds' reach.
Washington scored 19 points while adding a team-high eight rebounds and a season-high six blocked shots. Muldrow recorded 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting with seven rebounds and four assists. Soeken also tallied four assists to go with eight points and three rebounds. Freshman guard

Cloud County shot 22-of-56 (39.3 percent) from the field and 7-of-27 (25.9 percent) from behind the arc. The T-Birds turned the ball over 20 times and were outscored 27-11 in points off turnovers.
Cloud County will close out the regular season this Wednesday, March 4 with a 5:30 pm KJCCC game at Independence Community College.
