Cloud County Women's Basketball Team Wins Regular-Season Home Finale Over Garden City

Box Score The Cloud County Community College women's basketball team posted a 65-55 win over Garden City Community College in the regular-season home finale on Wednesday, February 25.

The T-Birds took control early behind balanced first quarter scoring, with all five starters scoring in the opening period. Sophomore Leila Washington and freshmen Amanda Makela and Camiah Muldrow each connected on a three-pointer as the T-Birds led 20-14 at the end of the first stanza.

Makela added another three-pointer in the second quarter to give Cloud County a double-digit advantage at 32-21 with 2:56 remaining in the first-half. Garden City finished just 1-of-4 from behind the arc in the opening half while turning the ball over nine times. Cloud County carried a nine point lead into halftime.

A Muldrow three-pointer followed by a Washington basket in the lane pushed the Cloud County lead to 14 points at the 6:07 mark of the third period. The Broncbusters ended the frame on a 15-6 run to narrow the lead to 45-40 entering the fourth quarter.

Cloud County scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter, including seven points from Washington, to grab a 14-point advantage again at 54-40 with 7:39 remaining. A Washington layup with 4:13 to play gave the T-Birds their biggest lead of the game at 60-43. The Broncbusters put together a 12-2 run to trail by seven points with just over a minute to go, but Cloud County converted three free-throws in the closing moments to secure the victory.

Washington recorded her fifth double-double performance of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Makela also had a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and a team-high six assists. Muldrow was in double-figures with 14 points and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Shea Wurtz, playing in her final home game in Arley Bryant Gymnasium, finished with six points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Freshman guard Marilyn Soeken made her 19th start of the season and had five points and four rebounds. Freshman forward Sofija Todorovic added three points, while freshman guard Elena Mangue had two points.

Cloud County shot 23-of-54 (42.6 percent) from the field, 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from behind the arc, and 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) from the free-throw line. The T-Birds held a 41-29 rebounding edge and scored 26 points in the paint. Cloud County also finished with 17 assists and 10 steals.

The T-Birds, who now stand at 13-14 overall and 9-13 in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) play, will visit No. 2 Butler Community College on Saturday, February 28, before traveling to Independence Community College for the regular-season finale on Wednesday, March 4.
