Cloud County Women's Basketball Team Toppled by Seward County, 91-49

Box Score The Cloud County Community College women's basketball team dropped a road contest to Seward County Community College, 91-49, on Wednesday, January 21 in Liberal, Kansas. The loss brings the T-Birds to 8-10 overall and 4-9 in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) play, while the win improves the Seward County Saints to 14-5 on the year and 9-4 in KJCCC action.

The T-Birds played without their leading scorer and assists leader Camiah Muldrow, who suffered an injury in practice earlier in the week, and couldn't keep up with the Saints. Cloud County was held to season-lows in made field goals (16), field-goal percentage (27.6 percent), made three-pointers (2), and three-point percentage (10.5 percent). The T-Birds also turned the ball over a season-high 29 times.

The 42-point setback by the T-Birds is their largest margin of defeat since a 101-35 road defeat to Hutchinson Community College on December 11, 2019.

Cloud County led 4-3 following two early field-goals from sophomore forward Leila Washington, but Seward County soon mounted a 28-8 run to grab a 31-12 advantage early in the second quarter. Cloud County answered with a 12-2 run of their own, capped off by a three-pointer by Washington, to narrow the lead to single digits at 33-24 with 2:10 remaining in the second period. Seward County scored the final 11 points of the half to go into the locker room with a 44-24 lead.

The T-Birds struggled to make up ground in the second-half. Cloud County was outscored 25-11 in the third quarter and 22-14 in the fourth quarter. Cloud County was limited to 20.8 percent shooting from the field in the second-half, including 0-of-7 from behind the arc.

Washington led the T-Birds with 21 points, six rebounds and a season-high five steals. Washington scored 15 of her points in the first-half. Freshman forward Sofija Todorovic, making her second start of the season, had 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Sophomore forward Shea Wurtz finished with five points and four rebounds. Freshman guard Marilyn Soeken had four points. Freshman guard Jelena Jankovic added two points, while freshman guard Elena Mangue rounded out the scoring with one point.

The T-Birds continue their two-game road trip on Saturday, January 24 at Barton Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
