Box Score Garden City's Marshea Fisher's layup with 1.9 seconds remaining was the game-winning basket as the Cloud County Community College women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker, 61-59, on Saturday, January 10 at Conestoga Arena in Garden City, Kansas.
The loss drops the T-Birds to 7-8 overall and 3-7 in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) play. The Garden City Broncbusters improve to 12-3 on the season and 7-3 in KJCCC action.
Cloud County was led by freshman guard
Camiah Muldrow who scored 20 points, marking her 13th consecutive double-digit scoring performance. Sophomore forward
Leila Washington recorded 11 points with a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore forward
Shea Wurtz added 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Cloud County struggled for points early, falling behind 11-6 at the end of the first quarter. The T-Birds were limited to two made field-goals and turned the ball over nine times in the opening ten minutes of action.
Cloud County opened the second period on a 7-1 run, climbing in front at 13-12 on a three-pointer by Washington at the 7:23 mark of the quarter. The two teams would exchange baskets with a triple by freshman guard
Amanda Makela putting the T-Birds up 16-14 with 5:48 remaining in the first-half. Garden City freshman guard Luana Luz answered with a three of her own to give the lead back to the Broncbusters. Freshman guard Elektra Mjoll would add another three-pointer down the stretch, allowing Garden City to take a 24-23 lead into halftime.
The T-Birds fell behind by six points midway through the third quarter, but battled back to pull to within two points at 40-38 on a three-pointer by freshman guard
Jelena Jankovic at the end of the period. Cloud County capitalized on the momentum in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 43 on a layin by Muldrow at the 6:56 mark. The two teams again traded baskets before Cloud County recaptured the lead at 48-45 on a three-pointer by Makela with 3:42 remaining.
The T-Birds stayed in front until freshman forward Deija Roberson scored with 57-seconds left to put the Broncbusters ahead, 56-55.
On the ensuing possession, Muldrow knocked down a fade away jumper to put Cloud County back in front, 57-56.
Roberson was fouled with 26 seconds to go and made both foul shots, but Muldrow again scored on a contested jump shot to give Cloud County a 59-58 edge with 6.3 seconds to play.
Following a timeout to advance the ball, Fisher, a freshman point guard from Washington, D.C., drove the right side of the lane and scored off the window. Fisher was also fouled on the play and made the free-throw to give Garden City a 61-59 lead with 1.9 seconds to play.
Cloud County had one more opportunity to respond, but Muldrow's contested three-point shot attempt from the right-side wing missed at the buzzer.
Cloud County shot 20-of-53 (37.7 percent) from the field and 6-of-21 (28.6 percent) from behind the arc, while Garden City finished 22-of-58 (37.9 percent) overall and 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) from deep. The T-Birds outrebounded the Broncbusters, 32-24, but Cloud County committed 21 turnovers compared to the Broncbusters' 12. Garden City scored 13 points off turnovers.
Cloud County returns to Arley Bryant Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 14 to face No. 14 Butler Community College. Butler (15-1, 9-1 KJCCC) upset No. 1 Dodge City Community College on January 10, 72-58, to hand the Conquistadors their first loss of the season. The Grizzlies have won six straight contests since losing to Garden City on December 3, 71-67. Tip-off is at 6 pm.
