Strong Defensive Effort Leads Cloud County Women's Basketball Team to 67-61 Win Over Garden City

Box Score The Cloud County Community College women's basketball team held on to beat Garden City, 67-61, at Arley Bryant Gymnasium on Thursday, February 20, sweeping the regular season series against the Broncbusters.

Freshman forward Talasia Thomas led four T-Birds in double-figures. Thomas had 15 points on just 3-of-6 from the field. Thomas knocked down 9-of-11 from the free-throw line to go along with five rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Freshman guard DaNae Crosby and freshman forward Shea Wurtz had 12 points each. Crosby also had three assists, while Wurtz added five rebounds and two steals.

Sophomore guard TiAna Davis finished with 10 points, three rebounds and two assists.

All eight T-Birds that saw action scored. Freshman forward Lilliana Petersen had a full stat line with six points, a team-high seven rebounds, four assists and one steal. Freshman guard Lauren Marron added five points. Sophomore forward Meilin Guo chipped in five points, while sophomore guard Kiley Smich had two points, four rebounds and three steals.

With the win, Cloud County has improved to 16-10 overall and 11-10 in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference action.

Garden City jumped out to an early 11-2 advantage following a three-pointer by freshman guard Jolie Mantz. The T-Birds answered with a 15-4 run, capped by a three-pointer by Davis, to make it 17-15 with 2:03 left in the first quarter. Davis had a pair of treys and Cloud County shot 50 percent from the floor in the opening period. Cloud County led 22-16 at the end of the first.

Cloud County led by as many as nine points in the first-half, but the Broncbusters shot the ball well in the second quarter, connecting on 5-of-7 field goals including one three-pointer. The T-Birds led 37-30 at the break.

Cloud County grabbed a nine point advantage early in the second-half, but Garden City quickly countered with a 17-7 run to cut the T-Birds' lead down to one point at 49-48 with 1:20 to play in the third quarter. Guo completed an and-one to push Cloud County's lead out to 52-48 entering the final frame.

Both teams struggled offensively the rest of the way, with Cloud County able to do the bulk of its scoring at the foul line. The T-Birds made 9-of-11 shots from the free-throw line over the final ten minutes to seal the win.

Cloud County concluded the game shooting 19-of-48 (39.6 percent) overall, 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) from three-point range, and 25-of-33 (75.8 percent) from the foul line. The T-Birds tallied 12 steals and forced Garden City into committing 25 turnovers, which led to 29 points off turnovers.

With the win, Cloud County has earned its third sweep in KJCCC play, after previously sweeping the regular season series against both Fort Hays Tech Northwest and Independence. Cloud County has also won 17 of its last 18 meetings with the Broncbusters.

Cloud County next heads to Arkansas City, Kansas to take on the Cowley College Tigers on Wednesday, February 26 at 5:30 pm.
