Cloud County Women's Basketball Falls at Home to No. 17 Coffeyville, 69-56

Box Score The Cloud County Community College women's basketball team suffered a 69-56 loss to No. 17 Coffeyville in a Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference contest Monday, February 17 in Arley Bryant Gymnasium.

The T-Birds were held without a made field goal for the first six minutes and 41 seconds of the first quarter. Coffeyville grabbed its first double-digit lead at 12-2 on a finish in the lane by sophomore guard Norika Welch at the 4:02 mark. Freshman guard Kailyn Willis followed with a three-pointer to extend Coffeyville's lead to 13 points. Sophomore forward Meilin Guo connected on a baseline jumper with 1:19 remaining in the first quarter for the first Cloud County field goal of the game. Freshman guard DaNae Crosby and sophomore guard TiAna Davis both scored in the final minute and the T-Birds trailed 17-8 at the end of the first period.

Coffeyville opened the second quarter on an 11-0 run to push its lead out to 20 points at 28-8, with Welch, freshman guard Karliey Parker and freshman guard Hallie Kitchen all knocking down three-pointers to start the quarter. The Red Ravens led by as many as 22 points in the opening half. Cloud County ended the second frame on a 10-2 run, including four points from freshman forward Talasia Thomas, to trail 35-21 at the halftime break.

Cloud County began the third quarter on a 10-5 run, cutting Coffeyville's lead to nine points at 40-31 on a layup by freshman forward Shea Wurtz with 5:39 to play. Wurtz had seven points and six different T-Bird players scored in the third stanza, allowing Cloud County to outscore Coffeyville 19-14 in the period. The Red Ravens led 49-40 to start the final quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, Thomas collected on a pair of free-throws to make it a seven point game, the closest the T-Birds had been since the 5:07 mark of the first quarter. Coffeyville regrouped and used a 16-6 burst to lead 65-48 with 2:59 left in the game. The T-Birds were limited to two field-goals over the final three minutes to fall by the 13-point margin.

Cloud County finished the afternoon shooting 19-of-49 (38.8 percent) overall, including shooting a season-low 1-of-14 (7.1 percent) from behind the arc. The T-Birds were also held to a season-low 21 rebounds, ending the game with only five offensive rebounds.

Thomas scored a team-leading 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds before fouling out of the contest. Crosby posted 11 points, four assists and two steals. Sophomore guard Kiley Smich had 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and a 3-of-3 effort from the free-throw line. Smich also collected three steals. Wurtz had eight points, six rebounds and five steals.

The T-Birds host Garden City Community College on Wednesday, February 19. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm.
