Cloud County Women's Basketball Suffers Road Loss to Barton

Box Score The Cloud County Community College women's basketball team suffered a road loss to the Barton Cougars, 64-59, on Wednesday, January 29 in Great Bend, Kansas.

Barton got off to a strong start, pouring in four three-pointers in the first quarter. Freshman guard Regina Donanu and sophomore guard Brittany Simpson led the way with five points each. The Cougars defense also limited the T-Birds to 28.6 percent shooting in the opening frame. Barton led 19-13 at the end of the first.

A jumper by Donanu pushed Barton's lead to ten points at 23-13 at the 7:16 mark of the second quarter. Cloud County freshman guard DaNae Crosby then connected on three straight three-pointers to trim the lead down to one point at 23-22 with 5:57 remaining. The margin stayed tight for the next three minutes before Barton went on a 5-0 run to close out the first-half. The Cougars entered halftime up 32-26.

Cloud County opened the second-half on an 8-4 run, capped off by a three-pointer by sophomore guard TiAna Davis, to get back to within two points with 7:35 to play in the third quarter. After freshman Getrude Mapiye scored in the paint for the Cougars, Cloud County went on a 5-0 run, taking the lead at 39-38 with 5:29 to go. The two teams traded the lead the rest of the period with Cloud County holding a 45-44 advantage headed to the fourth.

The game was tied six times in the fourth quarter with four lead changes. The T-Birds saw nearly their entire starting lineup foul out by the end of the game. Three of Cloud County's five starters ended the game on the bench. A pair of free-throws by Davis gave Cloud County a one point advantage at 56-55 with 2:33 left to play. The Cougars, though, closed out the game with a 9-3 run, with seven of the nine points coming at the foul line, to secure the win.

The Cougars went to the free-throw line 39 times compared to 16 trips for Cloud County. Barton shot 31.4 percent from the floor, 35.7 percent from behind the arc and 69.2 percent from the foul line. Cloud County ended the night at 33.3 percent from the field, 40.0 percent from long-range and 15-of-16 (93.8 percent) from the charity stripe.

On top of the free-throws, Barton outrebounded Cloud County, 46-31. The Cougars had 16 offensive rebounds and 30 defensive rebounds, led by sophomore Vivian Onugha who had a 24-point, 24-rebound double-double.

The T-Birds were led by Davis with 23 points. Crosby came off the bench to score 17, while freshmen Bre Frazier and Talasia Thomas each added six points.

The T-Birds will be back in action at home on Saturday, February 1 at 2 pm against Fort Hays Tech Northwest, part of homecoming and hall of fame weekend at Cloud County Community College.
