Box Score The Cloud County Community College women's basketball team battled at home but ultimately fell short against No. 4 Dodge City Community College, 77-69, on Saturday, January 25 in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play.
The T-Birds jumped out to an early seven point lead at 12-5 before Dodge City closed the gap, finishing the first quarter on an 8-1 run to tie the game at 13-all. Cloud County grabbed a four point advantage midway through the second period, led by freshman forward
Talasia Thomas who scored eight points in the quarter. The Conquistadors, though, found solid production off the bench from freshman guard Morgan Ruff, who tallied eight points in the second quarter on 3-of-3 shooting from the field with one made three-pointer. Freshman guard Savi Mi added two three-pointers of her own and Dodge City ended the first half on a 19-5 run to lead 34-24 heading into the break.
The two teams then combined to score 51 points over the next ten minutes. Cloud County shot 10-of-20 from the field during the third period, led by freshman guard
DaNae Crosby with 12 points in the quarter. Sophomore guard
TiAna Davis added six points, and the T-Birds registered seven assists on their ten made field-goals in the third frame. Meanwhile, Dodge City connected on five three-pointers in the third, led by sophomore guard Layla J-Cameron's 10 points. The Conquistadors led 59-50 entering the fourth.
A three-pointer by sophomore guard Tayah Morgan gave Dodge City a 12 point lead at 71-59 with 4:16 to go in the contest. Cloud County responded with a 10-2 run, highlighted by four points each from Crosby and freshman forward
Shea Wurtz, to shrink the deficit to 73-69 with 1:44 to play. Cloud County failed to score the rest of the way, and Dodge City sophomore forward Shorna Preston took care of business in the end, scoring the final four points to end the game and give the Conquistadors the 77-69 win.
The T-Birds had four players score in double-figures, led by Crosby's career-high 21 points to go with three rebounds, three steals and two assists. Thomas added 15 points and 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Wurtz chipped in 13 points, seven rebounds and five steals, while Davis finished with 11 points and six rebounds.
Cloud County did a great job crashing the glass against the much bigger Conquistadors, with both teams pulling down 40 rebounds on the day. The T-Birds ended with a 12-3 advantage in second-chance points.
The loss drops Cloud County to 12-7 overall and 7-7 in KJCCC action. The T-Birds will play a midweek road game against the Barton Cougars on Wednesday, January 29 at 5:30 pm, before returning home to take on Fort Hays Tech Northwest for homecoming weekend on Saturday, February 1 at 2 pm.
