Cold Shooting Sinks Cloud County Women's Basketball at Seward County

Box Score The Cloud County Community College women's basketball team was handed a 68-41 road loss to Seward County Community College in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play on Wednesday, January 22.

The T-Birds have fallen to 12-6 overall and 7-6 in conference action, while the Saints have improved to 13-6 overall and 8-5 in KJCCC play.

Seward County opened the game by scoring the first 10 points. The T-Birds fired back, cutting Seward County's lead down to four points at 14-10 on a layup by freshman guard Bre Frazier with 37 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The Saints held a 16-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter. 

Seward County grabbed a double-digit lead again at 21-11 on an offensive rebound and basket by sophomore Allie Myers. The Saints led by as many as 19 points after holding the T-Birds scoreless for over seven minutes in the second quarter. Cloud County ended the second period with just one made field-goal, a three-pointer by freshman guard Lauren Marron with 24 seconds to go before halftime. Seward County led 32-16 at the break.

The T-Birds opened the second half on a 13-3 run, highlighted by seven points from freshman forward Talasia Thomas, to trail 35-29 at the 3:45 mark of the third quarter. Back-to-back baskets by redshirt sophomore Ari Gordon and sophomore Kezia Grant-Bobb pushed Seward County's lead back to 10 points at 39-29. Marron added her second three-pointer of the night in the final seconds of the third, but Seward County maintained a 10 point advantage at 42-32 entering the final period.

The Saints dominated the fourth. Seward County opened the period on a 12-0 run, capped off by a steal and layin fom freshman guard Avery Marchino, to hold a 54-32 lead with 6:10 to play. The T-Birds were not able to get closer than within 20 points the rest of the way, and the Saints led by as many as 28 points in the final stanza. Seward County shot 10-of-18 (55.6 percent) from the floor with two made treys in the fourth quarter, while Cloud County was limited to 4-of-11 (36.4 percent) shooting, including an 0-of-3 effort from behind the arc in the final ten minutes.

For the game, Cloud County shot 13-of-48 (27.1 percent) from the field and 5-of-23 (21.7 percent) from three-point range. The field-goal percentage was Cloud County's lowest since shooting 23.4 percent in a 77-53 road loss to Dodge City on November 23, 2024. Seward County also outrebounded the T-Birds 43-25, and outscored Cloud County 34-14 in points in the paint.

Thomas finished with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting to go with a team-high six rebounds and two steals to lead the way for Cloud County. Frazier, Marron and sophomore guard TiAna Davis had seven points each. Freshmen DaNae Crosby and Shea Wurtz each had four points, while freshman forward Lilliana Petersen ended up with three.

The T-Birds will return home to host No. 4 Dodge City Community College on Saturday, January 25 for a 2 pm contest. Dodge City is 17-2 overall and 12-1 in KJCCC play. The Conquistadors are coming off a 65-58 home win over Garden City on January 22.
