Box Score Brett Erkenbrack became the newest member of the 750 win club and three players scored in double-figures as the Cloud County Community College women's basketball team pulled away from Garden City Community College for a 57-53 overtime victory in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play on Monday, January 13.
Erkenbrack improved to 750-376 in his 36th season coaching the T-Birds.Â
Freshman forward
Shea Wurtz hit a pair of free-throws to tie the game at 49 with just 0.3 seconds remaining in regulation.Â
The T-Birds then held the Broncbusters to a single field goal and forced four turnovers in extra time to capture their first conference win since December 11. The victory improves Cloud County to 11-4 overall and 6-4 in conference action.
Freshman forward
Talasia Thomas scored a season-high 22 points and finished with a season-high 17 rebounds, recording her second consecutive double-double and her fourth of the season. Thomas now has three 20 points or better scoring performances this season, the most of any T-Bird player.
Sophomore guard
TiAna Davis had 16 points, four steals and three rebounds, while freshman guard
Bre Frazier added 11 points, five assists and four rebounds.
Cloud County trailed by as many as 11 points in the second-half. The T-Birds opened the fourth quarter on a 13-4 scoring run to tie the game at 43 on a pair of free-throws by Frazier. Garden City scored the next four points, including three straight points by sophomore Antonicia Moultrie, to lead 47-43 with 1:11 to play.
Thomas answered with a bucket in the paint with less than a minute remaining. Davis followed with a steal and a transition layup to tie the game again at 47-all with 47 seconds left.
Garden City freshman Bruna Costa Da Silva scored in the paint to put the Broncbusters back in front at 49-47 with 15 seconds remaining.
Wurtz yanked down a vital offensive rebound after Davis missed a layup and drew a foul on her put back attempt with only 0.3 seconds remaining. Wurtz made both foul shots to force overtime. Wurtz had four points for the game, all of which came from the free-throw line, and was second on the team in rebounding with 7.
Davis and Frazier both scored in the paint and Davis added a pair of free-throws to give Cloud County a 55-49 lead with 1:19 left in overtime. Garden City shot just 1-of-6 (16.7 percent) from the floor in the extra period.
Cloud County freshman forward
Lilliana Petersen added a basket in the lane with 10 seconds left to seal the win. Petersen finished the game with four points and two rebounds.
Moultrie had 13 points and 12 rebounds to lead the way for Garden City. The Broncbusters have fallen to 8-7 overall and 5-5 in KJCCC play with the loss.
The T-Birds shot 21-of-56 (37.5 percent) overall and 3-of-11 (27.3 percent) from three-point range. Cloud County tallied 34 points in the paint and outrebounded Garden City by a 41-31 margin.
Cloud County led for almost 20 minutes, after racing out to a 12-0 advantage in less than five minutes of play in the first quarter. Garden City tied the game at 23 at the half on a layup at the buzzer by sophomore Sierra Driessen. The Broncbusters then dominated the third period, holding Cloud County scoreless for nearly four minutes and thirty seconds and limited the T-Birds to seven points on two made field-goals.
Cloud County continues its two-game road swing when they head to El Dorado, Kansas to face the Butler Community College Grizzlies on Wednesday, January 15 at 5:30 pm. Butler is 11-4 overall and 6-4 in KJCCC action and has lost two straight, including a 77-51 road loss to Garden City on January 11. The Grizzlies have won 12 games in a row against the T-Birds. Cloud County's last road win at Butler was a 57-54 victory on February 25, 2012.
