LINCOLN, Neb. - Led by a school-record time in the mile run by
N Vanee Anchike, the Cloud County Community College women's track and field team had another impressive weekend across two different meets as four new national qualifying marks were set at the 2024 University of Nebraska Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational inside the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.
A trio of T-Bird athletes also managed to compete in the 2024 Washburn University Open inside the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility in Topeka, Kansas with
Jasmine Sakaguchi (3.60 meters, 11 ft. - 9.75 in.) and
Bradie Medina (3.25 meters, 10 ft. - 8 in.) both setting new season-best marks in the pole vault. Joining the duo in the event was
Elizabeth Dunham who cleared 3.10 meters (10 ft. - 2 in.) to give CCCC three top-10 finishers with Sakaguchi taking first while Medina finished sixth and Dunham took ninth.
Action in Lincoln took place across two days, beginning on Friday with a number of T-Birds competing and seeing both
Rafiatu Nuhu (400 meters, 55.91 seconds) and Anchike (5,000 meters, 17:42.37) run national qualifying times. Anchike took fourth in her respective event after running the second-fastest time in the NJCAA this season while Nuhu placed eighth out of 43 runners in her event as part of a season-best time to improve upon her already qualified time of 56.20 seconds.
Saturday was the highlight of the weekend for Cloud County beginning with Nuhu running a season-best time of 24.69 seconds in the 200 meters to finish as the highest non-NCAA Division I or unattached athlete in the event while
Mercy Angaamchaab posted a time of 1:36.35 in the 600 meters to place seventh and qualify for the national championship meet. Right before seeing Anchike run a time of 4:58.04 in the mile run to break a 19-year-old school record previously held by Kellyn Johnson-Taylor,
Nontokozo Ncube added herself to the list of national qualifiers by running a time of 2:15.50 in the 800 meters to take 11th. The remaining national qualifying mark came in the high jump as
Cordaelia Williams cleared 1.65 meters (5 ft. - 5 in.) to join teammate
Shackala Henry who improved upon her already nationally qualified mark by clearing 1.70 meters (5 ft. -7 in.) as the two both finished in the top-11 out of a field of over 20 competitors.
What's Next?
One final meet ahead of the 2024 NJCAA Region VI/Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Indoor Track Championships will see Cloud County head back to Topeka one final time this spring to take part in the Washburn University Ichabod Invitational. The meet is scheduled to take place February 9th and 10th and will be the third time that CCCC has competed inside the Washburn University Indoor Athletic Facility during the 2024 indoor season.
