Box Score 2 CONCORDIA, Kansas — The Cloud County Community College softball team battled through adversity Saturday, bouncing back from a 13-5 loss in Game One to Fort Scott Community College, to walk-off the visiting Greyhounds, 4-3, in Game Two to earn the split.
Cloud County (8-10 overall, 2-4 KJCCC East) was without the pitching services of sophomore Jordan Ummel, who suffered some discomfort in her throwing arm Friday. But the dual-threat was able to help the T-Birds with the bat as she finished 2-for-4 and her fielder's choice in bottom of the seventh pushed across the winning run.
With the bases loaded and no outs, Ummel was able to put the ball in play and allowed freshman third baseman Payton Gillen, who led off the inning with a double, to race home and complete the come-from-behind victory.
Cloud County trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before freshman outfielder Shania Schraad produced a two-out, two run double to tie the score at 3-3 and shift momentum.
Schraad, who drove in Cloud County's first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning, finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI in Game Two.
Sophomore shortstop Nicole Dinkel was a perfect 3-for-3 out of the No. 5 spot in the lineup on Saturday, as well.
On the mound, freshman Madison Hammond notched her third win of the season with a gritty performance, tossing all seven innings while limiting Fort Scott (17-8 overall, 4-2 KJCCC) to three runs, two earned, on eight hits.
As for Game One, it appeared as the two teams were destined for a shootout as the KJCCC East foes combined for nine runs in the first inning of play.
Fort Scott jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first, but the T-Birds answered right back with four runs of their own.
Three runs came across courtesy of two errors by the Greyhounds in the inning, and the fourth on an RBI single by Ummel.
Unfortunately for Cloud County, the offense stalled after that as it didn't score again until the sixth inning on a RBI single from Hammond.
Hammond and Ummel were each 1-for-3 with an RBI, while sophomore outfielder Autumn Adams paced the T-Birds with a 2-for-3 performance in Game One.
Cloud County will be back in action on Tuesday when it travels to face No. 4 ranked Highland Community College. Game times are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
