T-Birds dominate third quarter in 83-51 rout of Allen County

Box Score

CONCORDIA, Kansas —Cloud County Community College women's basketball coach Brett Erkenbrack was all smiles Saturday night following his team's 83-51 drubbing of Allen County Community College.

His T-Birds (19-9 overall, 16-9 KJCCC) finished with 19 assists on 33 made field goals, shot a sizzling 47 percent from the floor and 3-point range, and dominated the interior with a 42-14 advantage in points in the paint.

"I really enjoyed watching us play (Saturday). That looked like Cloud County basketball and how it should look and how I want it to look," Erkenbrack said. "I appreciated that."

In her last regular season game inside Arley Bryant Gymnasium, sophomore Kelsi Mueller put on a show and orchestrated the onslaught as she finished with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting behind the 3-point line, six rebounds and four assists versus one turnover.

Mueller scored 18 of her 24 points in the first half against the Red Devils (9-23 overall, 4-21 KJCCC) and her eight made 3-point field goals on Saturday were one shy of the school record of nine set by Miklannet Tennal against Southeast Nebraska in 2000-01.

After a quiet January that saw the sophomore only reach double-figures in three of the nine games that month, Mueller has gone on a tear with eight straight games of 15 or more points.

She currently sits two made 3-pointers shy of surpassing Amy Chapman's single-season record for 3-pointers (95) set in 2006-07.

"(Mueller) was sick there for a while in the middle part of the season, around Christmas time. I think she has gotten her legs back," Erkenbrack said. "As I mentioned last week, I think our sophomores seem to be playing with a little more sense of urgency. She realizes time is drawing short for her and she's playing better, with more confidence and more energy."

Mueller's big first half helped the T-Birds out to a 40-32 lead at the break, but it would be a big third-quarter effort that put Saturday's game away.

Cloud County outscored Allen County, 27-6, in the third quarter on Saturday to balloon its lead to 67-38 heading to the fourth. It was a promising sign for the T-Birds, who had a 10-point lead erased in Wednesday's 74-67 loss to Cowley after a poor third quarter that saw them outscored 30-11 by the Tigers.

"I thought the third quarter was really good for us. We had such a horrendous third quarter (Wednesday) night against Cowley, so I'm real pleased with what we did in the third quarter defensively and on the boards," Erkenbrack said.

Defensively, Cloud County held Allen County to 13 percent shooting in the quarter (2-of-15) and received 10 third-quarter points from freshman guard, Carrie Davis.

Davis finished with her first career double-double as she went for 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman forward Scout Frame was the third T-Bird in double-figures with 20 points off the bench and seven rebounds. Fellow freshman Courtney Keech and Mikaela Meyers each had strong performances, with Keech finishing with six points, four assists, four rebounds and three steals, and Meyers tallying six points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

Sophomore forward Kennedy Gay continued her run of impact performances, as well, with four points, nine rebounds and three assists from the center position.

Cloud County will conclude the regular season at 6 p.m. on Monday with a road contest against Independence Community College.

Erkenbrack said that priority No. 1 for the T-Birds is to stay healthy and sharp for their guaranteed first-round home Region VI game at 6 p.m. on Thursday. But the T-Birds would certainly like some payback against the Lady Pirates, who beat Cloud County, 84-58, back on Jan. 13.

"They (Pirates) are a tough matchup for us because they are so big and have so much size. That was probably the low point of the season for us, back in January, when Independence came in here and throttled us," Erkenbrack said. "We couldn't do anything; we were scattered mentally. But we're a much better ball club now than we were then. We're going to have to play very well down there."
