CONCORDIA, Kansas — The Cloud County Community College softball team picked up a pair of victories Sunday in its impromptu home opener, earning victories of 5-0 and 7-4 over Bethany College JV.

Cloud County (2-2 overall) cruised to a 5-0 victory in Game One behind a complete-game shutout from freshman pitcher Madison Hammond.

The righty picked up her first collegiate win after shutting down the Swedes over seven innings. She scattered four hits — just one after the first inning — and struck out four versus one walk.

"She came back very strong after a tough first showing against Fort Scott," said Cloud County head coach Aaron Acree about Hammond. "She threw with confidence. She was bound and determined to get it done and she did that (Sunday). She was working ahead in counts and her changeup was on today."

Hammond's lineup got her some early run support on Sunday as the T-Birds pushed across a run in the first inning. Freshman first baseman Alyssa Corpus produced an RBI groundout to score sophomore Autumn Adams, who singled and stole two bases to get in scoring position

Cloud added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning; the big blow being a two-run double off the bat of freshman Kelsey Bowers. Bowers also provided the defensive gem on Sunday as the outfielder threw out a runner at home plate to keep Bethany off the scoreboard in the first inning.

Sophomore designated hitter Jordan Ummel was 3-for-3, and freshman Shania Schraad added a 2-for-3 performance at the plate to lead the T-Birds in Game One.

Game Two

In Game Two, the T-Birds were able to overcome some late-inning adversity to pull out a 7-4 victory.

Cloud County led 4-1 heading to the sixth inning, but Bethany College JV was able to scratch across three runs to tie the score at 4-4.

The T-Birds were able to answer the next half inning, though, with three runs of their own. Adams had a two-run single that scored Bowers and Schraad, and then came around to score one batter later on an RBI single by Ummel.

"That was absolutely huge," said Acree about his team's response. "We battled through it and got those runs back right away and I was glad to see us to do that."

Ummel also picked up her first win on the mound in 2018 on Sunday as she went all seven innings, allowed three earned runs on four hits and struck out 10.

The trio of Ummel, Corpus and Bowers each finished with two hits apiece in Game Two, while sophomore catcher Kayla West was 3-for-4 in the nightcap.

Cloud County and Bethany College JV will square off again on Thursday when the two teams play a doubleheader in Lindsborg. First-pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
