Empty possessions loom large in Cloud County's 61-55 loss to Coffeyville

Box Score

CONCORDIA, Kansas — The Cloud County Community College women's basketball team struggled in its return home Wednesday night following a four-game road trip, falling 61-55 to Coffeyville inside Arley Bryant Gymnasium.

Wednesday's game was out of character for a Cloud County (13-8 overall, 10-8 KJCCC) team that went 2-2 during the last road trip, with one of the losses being a tight 66-64 overtime defeat at the hands of No. 17 Hutchinson.

"This was a really bad loss for us," said Cloud County head coach, Brett Erkenbrack. "For some reason, we're not playing very well at home. We've played better on the road here lately and I wouldn't have expected this performance from us (Wednesday)."

The first quarter of Wednesday's contest was a microcosm of the inconsistency that plagued the T-Birds as the visiting Red Ravens (11-11 overall, 9-9 KJCCC) jumped out to 12-2 lead midway through the opening frame.

Cloud County stormed back to close the quarter on a 19-4 run, 15 of which came via Kelsi Mueller as the sophomore guard was a spotless 5-for-5 from 3-point distance over the final 2:37 to give Cloud its largest lead of the game at 21-16 heading to the second quarter.

Coffeyville countered with a box-and-1 defense to open the second quarter, forcing the ball out of Mueller's hands. She was limited to three points (1-for-3 shooting) the rest of the evening.

Freshman forward Scout Frame (15 points, nine rebounds) and freshman guard Carrie Davis (12 points, seven rebounds and four assists) helped carry the scoring load the rest of the way, but inconsistency on each end of the floor proved to be the T-Birds' undoing.

Cloud County shot 32 percent (13-for-41) over the final three quarters and lost the turnover battle, 20-11. The Red Ravens cashed in on the opportunities as they finished with a 19-12 advantage in points off turnovers.

"We had empty possessions all night long and just demoralizing possessions where we'd get the ball where we wanted to get it and someone would travel or lose the basketball," Erkenbrack said. "We also missed some layups and open shots in there. When you get beat and lose ballgames, there's a reason. And the reason (Wednesday) was we weren't good enough at the right times to make the right play on the offensive and defensive ends."

Coffeyville took the lead back for good at 49-46 with 6:25 remaining and was able to keep the T-Birds at an arm's length the rest of the way to hold on for the 61-55 final.

Cloud County will look to rebound when it heads back on the road this Saturday to face Neosho County. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
