CONCORDIA, Kansas — The Cloud County Community College softball team shined during the two-day Cloud County Spring Classic as the T-Birds went 4-1 over the weekend and executed well in all three facets of the game.

"I thought our pitching was excellent this weekend, our bats started coming alive, and we were very good, defensively," said Cloud County head coach, Aaron Acree. "A lot of bright spots. Everyone is starting to hit throughout the lineup. If we can eliminate some of the walks and limit errors, we're going to be pretty tough."

The T-Birds (7-5 overall) won both Saturday contests, earning a 3-0 shutout of Southeast Community College to begin things.

Freshman catcher Elise Oberlechner continued her hot start to the 2017 season as she smashed a two-run double in the fifth inning to give sophomore pitcher Bayleigh Cope some insurance runs.

Cope didn't need much as the right-hander had her best start of the season, going all seven innings, scattering seven hits and striking out seven.

Cloud County concluded Saturday's action with a 4-3 extra-inning victory over Iowa Western Community College later in the afternoon.

After trailing 3-0 entering the home half of the seventh, Cloud rallied for three runs to tie the score, aided by two errors and an RBI single from freshman Autumn Adams. In the tiebreaker, Iowa Western committed another error on a grounder to second by Oberlechner, scoring freshman Jordan Ummel from second base.

On Sunday, the T-Birds were edged 5-1 by Iowa Central Community College, the No. 18 ranked team in NJCAA Division II, to begin the day. They bounced back nicely a few hours later, though, as they cranked out a season-high 18 hits in a 16-1 rout of Central Community College-Columbus.

Cloud County scored 12 of its 16 runs in the first inning and had eight different players record at least one hit, led by Marissa Wright, Leslie Schuetz and Erin King with three apiece. Schuetz finished with a team-high four RBI.

The T-Birds then wrapped up tournament action with a 9-7 victory over Northeast Community College, which hosts Cloud County for a doubleheader this Friday.

Oberlechner was in the thick of things again as she 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored.

"Elise understands her role as the No. 3 hole hitter," Acree said. "We were able to start getting those hits in front of her to allow (Oberlechner) to get those RBI. She's been hitting the ball solid. She had a heck of a weekend."

Ummel in the cleanup spot followed suit against Northeast Community College as she went 2-for-4 with three RBI, as well. The right-hander also pitched three strong innings in relief to nail down the save.

Cloud County, now winners of six of its past seven games, will look to feed off of the momentum when it heads to Norfolk, Nebraska on Friday for a doubleheader against the Hawks.
