Box Score 4 FORT WORTH, Texas — The Cloud County Community College softball team went 1-4 over the weekend at the Cowtown Classic to begin its 2017 season.
The T-Birds earned their first win of the season in their Saturday morning matchup with Central Community College-Columbus, exploding for four runs in the top of the fifth inning en route to a 5-3 victory. All four runs came with two outs in the inning.
Freshman Autumn Adams had two of Cloud County's six hits in the game, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. She stole three bases in the fifth inning, including a steal of home as her and Madison Wright executed a double-steal. Wright trotted home two pitches later on an RBI double by Jordan Ummel.
Ummel also picked up her first collegiate win on the mound as she went all seven innings, allowed three runs, one earned and struck out three while not allowing a walk.
Cloud County played three games on Friday, losing a tough 6-4 matchup against Vernon College to open the tournament.
Freshman centerfielder Marissa Wright led the T-Birds as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI from the leadoff spot.
Cloud County fell 5-1 to Des Moines Area Community College in Game Two on and 11-0 to Ranger College in Game Three to conclude Friday's action.
The T-Birds rounded out the tournament on Saturday with another tight game, falling 5-4 loss to Seminole State College. Cloud County rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning, but Seminole State answered with a pair of runs in the home-half of the inning to retake control.
The Wright twins, Madison and Marissa, each finished 2-for-3 to lead the T-Birds' lineup.
Cloud County will be back in action on Thursday, March 2 for its home opening doubleheader against Bethany College. Game times are set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
