Softball Finishes Regular Season With Sweep of Southeast

Concordia, KS- Cloud Softball finished their regular season on Sunday with a sweep of the Southeast Community College Storm. The T-Birds used strong defense and timely hitting to earn the sweep. Cloud took game one 5-4 and rolled 8-1 in game two. 

Four Thunderbird Sophomores were honored between games. MiKayla Booth, Jessie Dixon, Bailey Dixon, and Lexi Duhrkop played their final home game at Cloud County.

Cloud now awaits the regional standings to see where they will head for the 2016 postseason. Postseason games are scheduled to run April 30-May 1. Despite their strong finish to the regular season Cloud will still play their first round matchup on the road. The T-Birds finished the regular season 17-19 overall and 7-15 in Jayhawk Conference play. 

The T-Birds trailed early in game one before sophomores MiKayla Booth and Bailey Dixon came up with big run producing at bats with two outs in the fourth. Booth ripped an opposite field double to score two and Dixon followed with her first home run of the season to make it 4-1. 

Southeast came right back with three more of their own in the fifth to tie the game at four and chase Cloud starter Lexi Duhrkop from the game. Bayleigh Cope took over from there. 

Bailee Larson scored Samantha Shafer in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to break the tie and give Cloud the lead for good. Shafer had reached on a lead off single. She had five hits on the day. 

Cope retired the Storm in the sixth and seventh to preservce the win in game one. She picked up the win in relief of Duhrkop. 

Cloud rode the momentum into game two as they would score three early. Shafer once again set the tone with a double down the line and started a three run rally. 

Cope, Duhrkop, and Ann Flach each had consecutive RBI base hits in the second inning to push the T-Bird lead to 7-0. 

Cope surrendered her only run of the game in the sixth on a solo home run to centerfield. 

Leslie Schuetz got it right back with a line drive shot to left in the bottom of the inning to push the lead to 8-1. Cope finished it for her second win of the day and Cloud earned the sweep. 

Shafer had a huge day at the plate. The Freshman from Topeka raised her average to .395 with a five hit day including three doubles. 

The Thunderbird defense struggled early on in the season but has shown great improvement down the stretch. Cloud went without an error on the day and played clean in five of their last six games of the regular season. 

The T-Birds now awaits the seedings to determine where they will play in the postseason. Cloud County finished the regular season 17-19.
