Box Score 2 Hesston, KS- The Cloud County Softball team earned a split in their final regional matchup of the regular season on Friday. Cloud knocked off Hesston College 7-5 in game one and lost 10-0 in the nightcap.
Cloud jumped out to a 6-0 lead in game one. The T-Birds struck first in the top of the first inning with a triple from Samantha Shafer and a two-run shot to centerfield from Leslie Schuetz.
The offense got going again in the third. Once again it was Shafer acting as the catalyst. She reached base and later scored on a single from Lexi Duhrkop. Cloud would plate another run in the inning when Lauryn Catron was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Shafer launched a two-run shot scoring Jaycee Worrell in the top of the fourth to extend the Cloud County lead to six.
Hesston made things interesting as they would come back with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Larks then scored in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run at second base when Cloud pitcher Bayleigh Cope induced a game ending ground ball to the shortstop Schuetz.
Shafer was a double shy of the cycle in the game. The freshman from Topeka went 4-4 and scored three runs.
Cope improved to 10-7 on the year with a complete game effort. She allowed nine hits and five runs, four earned. Cope struck out six and walked one.
Hesston jumped on the T-Birds early and often in game two. The Larks belted a first inning grand slam and never looked back. They added a single run in the second and batted around in the fourth to add five more. The game ended after five innings 10-0.
The T-Birds will play their final doubleheader of the regular season in a non-conference matchup with Southeast Community College on Sunday afternoon in Concordia. First pitch is set for 12:00pm and the Cloud County sophomores will be honored between games.
