T-Birds Region VI Championship Run Cut Short by Cowley

Box Score

Park City, KS- The Cloud County Lady Thunderbirds late season run was cut short Wednesday afternoon by the Cowley Tigers. Cloud lost to Cowley 68-44 in the semi-final round of the Region VI Playoffs.

Cowley and Cloud entered the day both playing their best basketball down the stretch. The T-Birds offense sputtered and Cowley ran away with it late.

The T-Birds jumped out to a big early lead and appeared to be carrying momentum over from their nine game winning streak. Kaley Broeckelman and Chelcie Kizart both drilled two first quarter threes and Cloud raced to an 18-12 lead after the first quarter.

Things got ugly for Cloud from there. The T-Birds entered a near ten minute scoring drought from the 1:01 mark in the 1st quarter until the 1:13 mark in the 2nd. Cowley scored 22 straight points to grab control of the game.

Kristina Farber scored four straight for Cloud to break the drought. Cloud was outscored 21-4 in the quarter and the Tigers took a 33-22 lead into halftime. Cloud shot just 6.3% in the second quarter.

The T-Birds attempted to cut into the lead out of the break as Broeckelman and Kizart hit threes in the first two minutes of the half. Cowley had an answer for everything as the T-Bird could never get it closer than eight.

Cloud went cold again in the fourth as they missed several open looks to cut it within eight. They trailed by eight with just 7:17 to play. Cowley launched a 19-3 run to end the game and stretch the final score to 68-44.

It was the T-Birds lowest scoring effort of the season. They shot just 23.7% from the field.

Kaley Broeckelman led Cloud with 12 points on four three pointers. Erin Alexander had another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Several Cloud County Lady T-Birds etched their names into the record books at Cloud County this season.

Alexander broke the school record for single season blocks. She finished 5th all-time in rebounds in a season and 25th in points.

Broeckelman finished 2nd all-time in three point baskets made in a season with 83. She surpassed Cloud County legend Miklannet Tennal who holds the 2nd and 3rd best single season totals. Amy Chapman hit 95 2006-07 and is the all-time leader.
