Box Score

Great Bend, KS- The Cloud County Lady Thunderbirds won their fifth straight with a 74-62 victory over the Barton Community College Cougars.

Freshman forward Erin Alexander etched her name into the record books at Cloud County as she blocked five shots on the night. This moves her season total to 90, surpassing Kina Miller as the all-time single season blocks leader. Miller blocked 89 in 2005-06. Alexander leads Region VI and ranks 2nd nationally in blocks.

The T-Birds pulled away late in a game that was much closer than the final score may have indicated. The Cougars took a 45-44 lead with just 2:34 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Cloud then launched an 11-2 run to pull away for good.

The T-Birds have finished strong in each of their last five games outscoring their opponents 108-61 in the final period during their five game winning streak.

Both teams started sluggishly as the T-Birds and Cougars combined to miss their first eight field goals. Cloud grabbed their first lead at the 1:55 mark in the 1st on a basket from Kristina Farber. The T-Birds ended the quarter strong and led 18-14 at the end of the 1st.

The T-Birds stretched their lead to as much as 12 in the second quarter but allowed Barton to storm back into it. Barton used an 11-0 run to get within one at 30-29 with 2:05 left before half. Barton Head Coach Trevor Rolfs then picked up a technical foul allowing Cloud to regain traction and take a 36-31 lead into halftime.

Barton would battle back in the 3rd and take the lead. The two teams traded leads several times in the quarter before Gabrielle Figgers nailed a three to start Cloud's late rally.

Alexander had another huge night with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Kaley Broeckelman had a big night for the T-Birds as she led all scorers with 21 points. Farber also had 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Cloud shot 47.4% from deep. Figgers got back on track as she nailed three of five from long range. The T-Birds were also solid from the line shooting 75% (15-20) from the charity stripe.

The Lady T-Birds will now shift the focus to league leader Garden City. The Busters lost to Seward County on Wednesday night and are now tied with Hutchinson for the league lead.

It will be homecoming and hall of fame induction night at Cloud County. Tipoff between the Lady T-Birds and Busters is set for 6:00 pm Saturday night.
