Cloud County defense stifles Coffeyville in 70-47 win

Box Score

CONCORDIA, Kansas — The Cloud County Community College women's basketball team showed no ill effects from Thanksgiving turkey when it took the floor Saturday against Coffeyville Community College as the T-Birds came back from their short holiday break and rolled to a 70-47 win over the Ravens.

The victory was the first Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) home win for Cloud County, which now boasts a record of 6-2 overall, 3-2 KJCCC after tallying a pair of blowout wins this week.

"The story of the game was our defense. I thought we played outstanding defense," said Cloud County head coach, Brett Erkenbrack. "Erin Alexander controlled the interior of the floor on both ends most of the night and I'm just really happy with our effort all over."

Alexander was one of three T-Birds in double-figures with 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Defensively she was a shot changer, finishing with seven rebounds, three blocks and numerous challenges around the rim.

Cloud County's defense limited Coffeyville (4-4 overall, 3-2 KJCCC) to 26 percent shooting for the game and just seven made field goal attempts in the first half en route to 38-21 lead.

Offensively, the T-Birds also made great strikes in their press breaker and attacking zone defenses, which had given them fits in their 61-43 loss to Seward County Community College back on Nov. 19.

"I thought we were a lot smoother offensively. We passed the ball a lot better and we were more aggressive against the zone," Erkenbrack said. "We're playing better and that's the key. I've told this group all along, 'If we play well, we have a chance to win every game that we play in.' And we didn't play well in our two losses last week. Tuesday night and (Saturday) we played well and showed what we can be."

Sophomore shooting guard Kaley Broeckelman led all scorers with a season-high 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Broeckelman had 13 of her 19 points in the first half.

Freshman forward Kennedy Gay played arguably her best game of the season, serving as a sparkplug off the bench with nine points, 10 rebounds and two blocks in 17 minutes.

Saturday night also saw a strong performance from sophomore point guard Chelcie Kizart as she joined Brockelman and Alexander in double-figures with 12 points.

Kizart struggled in the T-Birds' two losses to No. 6 Hutchinson and No 20 Seward County, scoring 10 combined points and committing 12 turnovers versus four assists. But the former Second-Team All-Conference player has righted the ship this week. She's scored 28 combined points the last two games while maintaining a 3:1 assist/turnover ratio.

"She's had two really good games this week and we need her to play well," Erkenbrack said. "She has to play well for us to beat good teams."

Cloud County will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to take on Neosho County Community College. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
