Lady T-Birds Let One Slip Away in 63-61 Loss to Coffeyville

Box Score

The Cloud County Lady T-Birds held the lead for the majority of the game but let it slip away with just under three minutes to play in the game, losing to Coffeyville by a final score of 61-63. Coffeyville is undefeated in league play and receiving votes in the NJCAA national polls. Cloud falls to 11-6 and 3-3 in league play.

Cloud jumped out to an early 8-3 lead on the Ravens before Chelcie Kizart picked up her second foul just minutes into the game. Without Kizart for the majority of the half, the T-Birds were able to remain in charge and held a narrow lead throughout. Katelyn Thomson entered the game averaging just 2.1 points per game, but it was Thomson that kept Cloud in charge in the first half. The sophomore from Riley, KS drained three from behind the arc and scored 9 of her season high 12 points in the first half. The T-Birds took a 33-29 lead into halftime.

Coffeyville answered quickly in the second half and took a 35-34 lead. The teams would trade leads until Kaley Broeckelman heated up and scored 8 points in the final three minutes of the third quarter. Cloud held onto the lead until the final minutes as the Ravens finished the game on a 10-4 run to up-end Cloud 63-61.

It was a cold shooting night for the Thunderbirds. The T-Birds shot just 33.8% from the field and hit 6 of 24 from behind the three point line. Cloud was out-rebounded by the Ravens by 12.

Erin Alexander and Kaley Broeckelman led the T-Birds with 14 points each. Alexander added 11 rebounds and 7 blocked shots as well. Katelyn Thomson had her best performance this season connecting on 4 of 8 from deep for her 12 points.

The T-Birds will now head to Allen County on Saturday as they finish play against the traditional Jayhawk East conference opponents. Tip-off is set for 2:00pm.
