Walk Off Wins Lead Cloud County Softball Team to KJCCC Sweep Over Fort Scott

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Cloud County Community College softball team swept both ends of a doubleheader against Fort Scott Community College, winning 10-8 in eight innings and 6-5 in seven innings on Wednesday, April 8. The victories marked the T-Birds' first Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) sweep of the season and their first regular season sweep over the Greyhounds since the 2018 season.

The two wins brought Cloud County's overall record back to the .500 mark, at 11-11 overall and 4-4 in KJCCC play.

Freshman Maddie Harold drilled a two-out, 1-2 pitch over the left field wall in the bottom of the eighth inning for a game-winning two-run home run to complete Cloud County's comeback win in game one.

The T-Birds trailed 8-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Harold, who has been one of the team's clutch performers this season, drew a one-out walk. Freshman third baseman Hannah Gardner followed by reaching on an error. Freshman second baseman Allison Adams singled to left field to score Harold, while freshman pitcher Ava Boden drove in Gardner on a base-hit to center field to tie the game at 8-8.

Boden retired Fort Scott in order in the top of the eighth. Boden had a wonderful performance in the circle and picked up her fourth win of the season. She tossed eight innings and allowed just two earned runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Freshman Brooke Lougheed led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single to left. After sophomore Berkleigh Curtis advanced Lougheed to second on a sacrifice bunt, Fort Scott freshman pitcher Makenna Lawson struck out sophomore short stop Maliyah Koster for the second out of the inning. Harold followed by lifting a two-out, two-run home run to lift the T-Birds to victory. Harold now has a team-leading five home runs and 23 RBI on the season.

Harold went 2-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Lougheed finished 3-for-5 with a double, scoring two runs while driving in two more. Boden and Adams had two hits each. The T-Birds finished with 13 hits for the second consecutive game and for the fifth time this season.

Cloud County added a second walk-off victory in game two when Boden drove a double into right field to score freshman first baseman Jaci Vonlintel in the bottom of the seventh inning. It marked Cloud County's fourth walk-off win of the season.

Fort Scott got on the board in the top of the first when freshman Kabrie Parmley drilled a three-run home run to center field.

The T-Birds answered with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by RBI hits from Curtis, Koster, Gardner and freshman pitcher Morgan Williams.

Fort Scott tied the game with RBI doubles from sophomore Amia Carr in the second inning and sophomore KJ Gregg in the third.

The score remained 5-5 until the bottom of the seventh. The T-Birds left runners stranded in the third and fourth innings, and loaded the bases in the sixth but failed to capitalize on the opportunities.

Pitching in relief, Harold was outstanding in her 4.2 innings of work, allowing no runs on two hits with two walks while striking out seven. Harold got the win, improving to 5-6 on the season. Harold currently leads KJCCC Division 2 with 71 total strikeouts on the season, while she's holding opposing hitters to a .279 batting average.

Koster went 2-for-4 with a double, one run scored and one RBI. Eight other T-Birds finished with one hit each.

Cloud County will continue KJCCC play on Saturday, April 11 at Labette Community College. The doubleheader is set to begin at 2 pm.
