Two alumni of the Cloud County Community College women's track and field program will be competing in the twentieth edition of the World Athletics Championships, scheduled for September 13-21 in Tokyo, Japan. This is the third time that the championships will be held in Japan, following the 1991 event in Tokyo and the 2007 event in Osaka. Forty-nine events will be contested across nine days featuring a group of over 2,000 of the world's top athletes from approximately 200 countries, with the full slate of competition set to show on Peacock and select events on CNBC.
Former T-Bird Nayoka Clunis will represent Jamaica in the women's hammer throw qualification round starting on Saturday, September 13 at 7 pm CT. Clunis began her collegiate career at Cloud County, competing in hammer throw, shot put, javelin and discus. Clunis finished as the 2017 NJCAA discus national champion and an 11-time national place winner at the NJCAA indoor and outdoor national championships during her two years competing for the T-Birds. Following Cloud County, Clunis attended the University of Minnesota where she became a three-time All-American with the Gophers. Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, Clunis qualified for the World Athletics Championships in the 26th spot out of 36 competitors.
Vimbayi Maisvorewa qualified for the 2025 World Athletics Championships after clocking a new women's Zimbabwean national 400m outdoor record of 50.25 seconds at the Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville, Florida in April 2025. Maisvorewa ran at Cloud County Community College for two years, winning the 2022 NJCAA outdoor title in the 400m (54.18) and the 2023 NJCAA indoor title in the 400m (53.50). A five-time NJCAA national championships medalist, including a member of the Cloud County NJCAA indoor runner-up 4x400m relay team in 2022, Maisvorewa later attended Auburn University where she became a five-time All-American. Maisvorewa will compete in the women's 400m starting with the first round on Sunday, September 14. The finals will be held on Thursday, September 18.
