The Cloud County Community College volleyball team continues its early non-conference slate this weekend at the 2025 McCook Community College Labor Day Weekend Tournament in McCook, Nebraska. The T-Birds will open play Friday, August 29 against Amarillo College at 2 pm and McCook Community College at 6 pm, before closing the weekend against Lamar Community College and Iowa Western Community College on Saturday, August 30.
The T-Birds enter the weekend at 3-3 following a pair of victories at a home triangular on Wednesday, August 27. Cloud County opened the triangular with a four-set defeat of Southeast Community College before outlasting McPherson College JV in five sets.
Through the first six matches of the season, Cloud County has received balanced production across the lineup. Sophomore outside hitter
Grace Rowland leads the team with 55 kills, an average of 2.89 kills per set, while adding 42 digs. Freshman middle hitter
Elizabeth Schuster has 34 kills on a .298 hitting percentage while adding 16 blocks. Making her season debut on Wednesday, returning sophomore pin hitter
Carlie Carlgren finished the home triangular with 30 kills, averaging 3.75 kills per set on a .214 clip. Freshman
Zoey Sudbeck has contributed 30 kills and nine blocks, while freshman
Kenadie Casanova has 23 kills and 11 total blocks.
Setters
Ylvie Schmid and
Addyson Ogle have aided the offense. Schmid leads the T-Birds with 119 assists, an average of 7.93 assists per set, to go with 30 digs and seven service aces. Ogle has 56 assists, 23 digs, and leads the team with ten service aces.
Defensively, sophomore libero
Beatrice Giusti has anchored the back row with 50 digs, an average of 2.38 digs per set. Freshman
Brooke Lougheed is averaging a team-best 2.44 digs per set with 39 digs, while sophomore
Berkleigh Curtis has 21 digs on the year.
The Amarillo College Badgers are 4-1 on the season following three wins at the New Mexico Military Institute Volleyball Classic in Roswell, New Mexico and a road sweep of Lamar Community College on Wednesday. Amarillo is coached by Scott Sandel, who has led the Badgers to back-to-back 11 win seasons in his first two years with the program.
Friday's showdown with McCook Community College will be the first for Cloud County since 2023 when the T-Birds earned a five-set win over the Indians at that year's Northeast Community College Marriott Invitational in Norfolk, Nebraska. McCook is 0-3 to begin this season following losses to Casper College, Gillette College and Seward County Community College at the North Platte Community College Opening Weekend Tournament in North Platte, Nebraska. Prior to their matchup with Cloud County, McCook will face Indian Hills Community College and Hutchinson Community College at this weekend's tournament.
Lamar Community College has fallen to 0-5 overall to begin their 2025 campaign following this week's home loss to Amarillo College. The Runnin' Lopes opened their season at the Scooter's Invite in Garden City, Kansas last weekend where they dropped four matches, including pair of three-set losses to Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference schools Barton Community College and Garden City Community College. Cloud County and Lamar last played a neutral site game in Dodge City, Kansas on September 18, 2021 with the T-Birds winning the match in straight sets.
Cloud County will close out the weekend against the Iowa Western Reivers. Iowa Western currently sits at 3-1 overall after hosting the annual Reiver Classic in Council Bluffs, Iowa last weekend. Iowa Western swept Western Nebraska before earning four set victories over both Hutchinson Community College and Butler Community College. The team's only loss was a three-set defeat to Salt Lake Community College. Cloud County has lost six straight matches to the Reivers, including three neutral site losses.
