Cloud County Softball Falls in Both Ends of a Doubleheader to No. 18 Neosho County

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Cloud County Community College softball team suffered a home sweep at the hands of No. 18 Neosho County Community College in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play on Thursday, April 3 at the CCCC Softball Field in Concordia. Neosho County took the first game 13-4 in six innings and the finale 10-0 in five innings.

The T-Birds have fallen to 9-19 on the year and 0-6 in conference play with the loss, while the Panthers have improved to 18-10 overall and 6-0 in conference action with the win. 

Cloud County opened the scoring in the first game with sophomores Camille Stauffer and Harley Smith scoring on defensive errors committed by the Panthers in the bottom of the second inning.

The Panthers put down three bunt singles and recorded five hits and scored four runs to build a 4-2 lead in the top of the third. Sophomore Annsleigh Morris drove in two runs with a double to left field, while sophomore Paige Hutsell added an RBI single to right.

The T-Birds tied the game at 4-all in the bottom half of the third when freshman Maliyah Koster scored on an RBI ground out by Stauffer and freshman Emalee Johnson came home on an RBI single by freshman Lilly Ellison.

Neosho County made it a 6-4 game in the top of the fourth off a second RBI double to left by Morris and another RBI single by Hutsell.

Hutsell delivered her third RBI single of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore Kamri Naff also added an RBI single in the fifth, extending Neosho County's advantage to 8-4.

The Panthers capped the scoring with five runs in the sixth inning with two outs. Neosho County finished the contest scoring eight of their 13 runs with two outs. Naff had a double to left and scored a run in the sixth. Morris was hit by a pitch and scored a run. Sophomores Addison Bloodgood and Emma West and freshman Favy Najar added runs as well.

Sophomore Paige Mahler suffered the loss in the circle, falling to 4-8 on the season.

The T-Birds were limited to six hits in the loss. Stauffer led the way with two hits, one run scored and one RBI. Koster had one hit and one run scored. Ellison had an RBI hit, while sophomore Shaylee Keslar and freshman Berkleigh Curtis finished with one hit each.

Carrying the momentum from game one, Neosho County scored one run in the top of the second inning of game two when Hutsell smacked a one-out solo home run to center field. Morris and Hutsell added RBI in the top of the third, putting the Panthers ahead 4-0. Neosho County loaded the bases in the top of the fourth before Naff blasted a two-out grand slam to left-center to make it 8-0. West completed the scoring with a single to left field in the top of the fifth, driving in sophomore Aysha Houk and freshman Kaylee Parker for the 10-0 victory.

Sophomore Brecken Whitney handled pitching responsibilities in game two. Whitney has fallen to 4-6 on the year.

Sophomore outfielder Jillian Artiges had the only hit of the game for the T-Birds.

Cloud County will continue Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play on Sunday, April 6 with a 1 pm doubleheader at Fort Scott.
