Box Score HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Late rallies in each of the first two sets by host Hutchinson Community College would put the Cloud County Community College volleyball team in a 2-0 hole before dropping the third set to fall by a score of 3-0 inside the Hutchinson Sports Arena on Saturday, October 7th.
Having a four-match Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference winning streak snapped, Cloud County falls to 19-7 overall and 5-5 in the KJCCC while Hutchinson bounces back from a road loss this past Wednesday to Seward County to improve to 17-9 overall and 8-3 in the Jayhawk Conference.
Recording two service aces from freshman
Bradie Medina to go along with a
Madison Ronnebaum kill, CCCC would score the opening three points of the match before seeing the Blue Dragons take advantage of a pair of T-Bird attack errors to pull things back even at 3-3. The three-point stretches would continue with Cloud County stringing together another three straight points with back-to-back
Jacey Schurle kills and a
Doga Eski kill as the CCCC would go on to take a four-point lead at 9-5. After seeing Hutchinson pull back within one at 9-8, Cloud County would push their lead back to three before holding their lead over the course of the next four points of play. An Anna Dean kill for HCC would tie the opening set at 13-13 before seeing ties at 14-14 and 15-15 with both teams looking to grab control heading into the back end of the set. Reclaiming the lead off a Kloë Waymel kill and Eski service ace, Cloud County would force Hutchinson to use a timeout before seeing the Blue Dragons rattle off five straight points to turn a two-point T-Bird lead into a three-point deficit at 20-17. Ending the rally with another kill from Waymel, CCCC would see Hutchinson once again put together a run by ending the set by scoring five of the final six points to take a 25-19 opening set win.
Things would play out in a similar fashion in the second as it once again would be Cloud County scoring the opening points of the set before seeing neither team hold a lead of more than four throughout the opening 20 points of the set. Trailing 11-8 following a Blue Dragon kill, CCCC would take advantage of an attack error from HCC before getting a
Brette Doile service ace to pull back within one at 11-10.
Ashley Suter would add another service ace three points later to tie the set at 12-12 as the next four points would be traded back-and-forth to account for two more ties in the set. The 14-14 tie would eventually be broken by Hutchinson with back-to-back kills as part of a 4-0 run to force the T-Birds to use their first timeout of the set. Following a kill from
Katelynn Brogan, Cloud County would again see the Blue Dragons take control heading into the final stretch as seven of the final nine points would be scored by HCC with the final two points coming on service aces to finish a 25-17 Hutchinson set victory.
A nip-and-tuck start to the third would see a back-and-forth battle between teams account for seven ties in the opening 20 points of the set with neither team able to take control and string together more than three points at any given rally. With things tied at 11-11 following a Hutchinson service ace, the Blue Dragons would then take advantage of a T-Bird attack error before a kill to go up 13-11 and build momentum once more. After a service error from HCC to give service back to Cloud County, CCCC would see a Hutchinson kill followed by a block push the deficit to four at 16-12 as things would begin to get away from the T-Birds. Two more points out of the timeout for the Blue Dragons would make it a six-point margin that would prove to be enough to keep the set from being contested late as HCC would close the match out with a 25-18 set win.
Limited to just 28 kills in the match, Cloud County would hit .088 as a team compared to a .230 attack percentage for Hutchinson while also seeing the Blue Dragons outscore the T-Birds 12-8 at the service line. HCC would double up CCCC in blocks 4-2 and finish with a 64 percent sideout percentage compared to just a 46 percent sideout efficiency for Cloud County.
No player for CCCC would have more than six kills with Schurle leading the team as part of an individual .417 attack percentage while seeing Waymel record five kills on nine attempts and also finish with an attack percentage above .400. Brogan (12) and Suter (10) would split 22 of Cloud County's 26 set assists while three different T-Birds (Eski, Medina, and
Emery May) would all finish with two service aces. Hutchinson was led by a match-high 14 kills from Taniya Golden while getting 33 set assists from Giovana Ravanhani.
