WINFIELD, Kansas — The Cloud County Community College track and field teams combined for seven event wins and 13 national qualifying marks on Thursday at the Southwestern Invitational, highlighting a strong performance in their return to action to begin the outdoor portion of their schedule.
Sophomore thrower Gabbreil Harris, the NJCAA national champion in the women's weight throw during the indoor season, picked up where she left on as she earned event wins and posted national qualifying marks in the hammer throw (160-feet) and discus (165'3'').
Her teammate, freshman Avi Bulai, was not far behind as Bulai also punched her ticket to the national meet in each event, finishing fourth in the hammer throw (146'11'') and fifth in the discus (137'05'').
Freshman Shanee Angol, making her Cloud County debut, capped a strong afternoon for Cloud throwers by winning the javelin with a national qualifying throw of 139'1''.
The women's 4X100-meter relay team picked up the forth event win for the Cloud County women's team, posting a national qualifying time of 48.31 seconds.
Cloud County also received top-3 finishes from freshmen Nikki Kraaijeveld and Kenisha Stubbs in the 400-meter hurdles. Kraaijeveld was the runner-up in the event with a time of 1:09.33, edging Stubbs who was right behind her in third place at 1:09.39.
On the men's side, it was Cloud County's distance runners that set the pace as sophomores Moses Dirane, Thobile Mosito and Stephen Marindich all earned first-place finishes.
Dirane took the top spot in the 1,500-meter run, crossing the finish line in 4:03.11, and added a third-place finish in the 800-meter run behind Marindich, who was second in the 1,500-meter run and won the 800-meter run with a national qualifying time of 1:57.00.
Mosito claimed his victory in the men's 10,000-meter run, showing off his endurance with a national qualifying time of 32.39.85, which was over two minutes faster than second-place finisher Jersey Boydstun from Southwestern.
The Cloud County men's team added three additional runner-up finishes Thursday.
Freshman vaulter Andy Caris recorded his best finish of the seasib in the men's pole vault, earning second overall with a vault of 14'1.25''.
The T-Birds' 4X400-meter relay team (3:23.86) and sophomore thrower Vashon McCarthy (55'0.25'') in the men's shot put added second-place finishes on the afternoon, as well. McCarthy's mark guaranteed him a spot at the national meet.
Sophomore sprinter Wesley Logorava also earned his spot at nationals in two events Thursday, finishing third in the 200-meter dash (21.47) and eighth in the 100-meter dash (10.64).
Rounding out Cloud County's national qualifiers on Thursday was the men's 4X100-meter relay team, which finished third overall after posting a time of 41.63, sophomore Robson Yinambe in the 400-meter hurdles (54.94), and Murphy Bavinga in the triple jump (47'11.75).
The T-Birds will be back in action next Friday and Saturday at the Arkansas Spring Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
