FORT SCOTT, Kansas — After inclement weather postponed the beginning of the 2018 season for the Cloud County Community College softball team, the T-Birds were able to take the field for the first time this spring on Thursday for a doubleheader against Fort Scott Community College.

Cloud County had some bright spots during the afternoon, but were unable to put a complete game together as it fell 9-3 and 8-4 to the Greyhounds.

In Game One, the T-Birds grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when sophomore Autumn Adams drilled a one-out triple and came around to score on a RBI single by sophomore Jordan Ummel.

The duo each finished with two-hit games, as did sophomore catcher Kayla West, and scored all three runs for the Cloud County offense.

Fort Scott's lineup was able to answer the bell, however, as the Greyhounds scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, four in the second inning, and two more in the third to jump out to an 8-3 lead before the teams settled in.

Ummel pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief in Game One, allowing just one earned run as she scattered eight Fort Scott baserunners.

As for Game Two, Cloud County was again able to grab an early lead as it went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning.

A passed ball on Fort Scott and a RBI triple by West got the T-Birds off and rolling. They'd build their lead to 4-0 after adding an unearned run in the third on another passed ball, and an unearned run in the fifth.

Unfortunately, the bottom of the fifth spiraled out of control for the T-Birds as Fort Scott rallied for eight runs, aided by two errors and a pair of passed balls for Cloud County, to steal an 8-4 victory.

Offensively, West paced the Cloud County lineup with a 2-for-3 effort with a run scored and an RBI, while freshmen Payton Gillen, Kelsey Bowers and Alyssa Corpus all collected their first collegiate hits.

The T-Birds will look to bounce back Sunday when they travel to face Bethany College JV in a doubleheader. Game times are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
