Box Score 4 The Cloud County Thunderbird Softball team had a perfect 4-0 weekend with doubleheader sweeps over Brown Mackie and Southeast Community College.
Bayleigh Cope led the charge for the T-Birds logging 18.2 innings in the circle allowing just two earned runs. She struck out 13 and didn't walk anybody in her four appearances. Cope started game one against Brown Mackie and Southeast, and also came on in relief both days in game two. She finished the weekend going 2-0 with a save. Cope also drove in eight runs and had two home runs at the plate for the T-Birds.
Cope and Cloud County Sophomore Lexi Duhrkop combined to pitch 26 innings on the weekend and walked just two batters. The T-Birds also cleaned up their defense as they comitted just three errors in the four games combined.
Cloud scored 27 runs on a blustery afternoon in Salina as they swept the Brown Mackie Lions by scores of 10-3 and 17-9 on Friday.
Lexi Duhrkop launched a third inning grand slam as a part of a seven run third to propel Cloud past Brown Mackie in game one.
The T-Bird offense exploded for 14 hits including five doubles in the contest.
Cope pitched and allowed her only two earned runs of the weekend in her first inning of work.
The bats continued to stay hot in game two as Cloud would use a ten run second inning outburst to go ahead and beat Brown Mackie 17-9.
The Lions threatened a comeback with five runs in the fourth but T-Bird Coach Aaron Acree went back to Cope in relief this time and she threw two and two-thirds scoreless relief to preserve the win.
Jaycee Worrell was 4-5 in the game. Samantha Shafer was 3-5. Leslie Schuetz had two doubles and went 2-4 with four RBI. The freshman trio along with Cope are all hitting over .350 on the season now.
On Saturday the T-Birds traveled to Beatrice, NE for a doubleheader with Southeast Community College.
Cope did it all for the T-Birds as she threw a complete game shutout and also drove in all four T-Bird runs. Cope went deep twice in the game and also had a double. She allowed just four hits and struck out five. Cloud won game one 4-0.
The T-Birds won game two of the twinbill 5-2. Cloud used a four run sixth inning to bust it open and seal a victory.
The four run sixth was powered by back to back home runs from Erin King and Jessie Dixon. King delivered a three run blast with two outs in the inning and Dixon followed with a solo shot.
Lexi Duhrkop went five strong innings before giving the ball to Cope to finish the game and pick up her first save of the season. Duhrkop allowed two earned in five innigs of work.
Cloud County is now 14-18 overall and 9-15 in region play. They have just four regular season games remaining. They will play at Hesston on Tuesday, April 19th before finishing their season at home against Southeast on Sunday, April 24th.
