Box Score 2 Concordia, KS- The Cloud County softball team opened their Jayhawk Conference play against Hutchinson on Tuesday afternoon. The T-Birds were swept by the Blue Dragons by the scores of 9-1, and 11-7.
Cloud County 1 Hutchinson 9
In game one, Hutch broke the game open in the second inning on a grand slam from Ally Raines. It was Hutchinson's first of five home runs on the day. The T-Birds would remain within striking distance into the 7th before the Blue Dragons added four more runs to push the final score to 9-1.
Cloud was held down by Hutchinson starter Holly Kelley. Kelley went a complete game and struck out nine, allowing just four T-Bird base runners in the game.
Lexi Duhrkop started for the T-Birds in the circle. She went five innings before giving way to Bayleigh Cope.
Ann Flach had an RBI double in the fourth scoring Cloud's only run in the game.
Cloud County 7 Hutchinson 11
The T-Birds came out swinging in game two. They jumped on the Blue Dragons for three quick runs in the first. Cloud sent seven hitters to the plate and got a big RBI double from Erin King.
Hutch quickly answered with three of their own in the top of the inning off of Cloud starter Bayleigh Cope.
Cloud County then came back with three more to go up 6-3 in the 2nd. They led off the inning with five straight singles and a sac fly to score the three runs and take back the lead.
The T-Birds remained in charge until the fifth inning when Hutch would hit back-to-back two-out solo home runs to launch a rally and tie the game at seven.
Hutch would plate three more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to take an 11-7 lead. Meanwhile, the Blue Dragons had went back to game one starter Holly Kelley who would shut the T-Birds down for the final five innings and pick up the win in game two as well.
Cloud had 11 hits in the game. Jaycee Worrell, Leslie Shuetz, Ann Flach, and Samantha Shafer had two hits each.
The Blue Dragons hit four home runs in game two. They entered the day with a league leading .407 batting average.
Cloud has now played six games in just four days and will get some much needed rest. The T-Birds will not play again until Friday, March 18th when they will host Neosho County.
