Box Score BENTON, Kansas- The Cloud County Community College volleyball team found itself in a familiar spot Saturday, trailing 2-1 through three sets on the road, this time against Butler Community College. In their previous two road matches, the T-Birds faced the same challenge of a must-win fourth set and fought back to earn five-set victories.
Unfortunately, for Cloud County, it couldn't duplicate the magic again Saturday as the Grizzlies held on for the 3-1 win: 25-17, 17-25, 25-19 and 28-26.
Butler Community College (13-7 overall, 3-6 KJCCC), winners of nine of their last 10 matches, haulted the T-Birds' latest comeback attempt in what was a wild fourth set. After Cloud County (10-11 overall, 4-5 KJCCC) had built a 16-8 lead, the Grizzlies scored five straight points to recapture the momentum and win the fourth set, 28-26.
The win for Butler force a split of the season series between the two programs after Cloud County beat the Grizzlies 3-2 back on August 31. The loss was just the second true road loss (non-tournament play) of the season for the T-Birds.
Offensively, Cloud County was led by freshman Elizabeth Nobert as she tallied a team-high 14 kills. Redshirt freshman Drew Mann joined Nobert in double-figures with 11 kills, while fellow redshirt freshman Kylie McKinney added seven kills.
Freshman Christen Greving had three of the T-Birds five aces, and sophomore outside hitter Cara Flach had a solid afternoon, posting team-highs in assists (33) and digs (nine).
Cloud County will look to bounce back Wednesday when it closes out its current five-match road swing against KJCCC Division I leaders, Colby Community College (16-4 overall, 7-1 KJCCC). Start time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
