RESULTS
MONROE, LA – Scoring 41 of their total 49 points on the final two days of competition, the Cloud County Community College men's track and field team put an end to their 2024 outdoor track and field season with a sixth-place showing at the 2024 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Monroe, Louisiana.
Finishing with the second-highest team total among schools from the Kansas Jayhawk Community Conference, Cloud County finished three points ahead of seventh-place Coffeyville (46) while sitting 24.5 points back of fifth-place Indian Hills (73.5). The rest of the top-four saw South Plains win a fourth-straight title with 116 total points followed by New Mexico Junior College (107 points), Iowa Western (88 points), and Barton (76 points).
Friday Results:
After securing eight points in Thursday's action from a second-place finish in the 4x800 meter relay, Cloud County saw the conclusion of the decathlon lead to 12 team points with
Kevin Brooks earning a national runner-up finish after totaling 6,795 points while
Brandon Hutchinson placed fourth with 6,553 points. The big marks for the duo in the final five events of the multi-event competition saw Hutchinson place first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.74 seconds and second in the discus (38.88 meters, 127 ft. – 6 in.) while Brooks placed second in the 1,500 meters (4:41.51). Two other events led to points for CCCC on the second day of action with
Corey Ottey clearing 2.12 meters (6 ft. – 11.5 in.) in the high jump to take national runner-up honors based off misses in his first two attempts at the height while Iowa Western's Paul Rowden took National Champion honors by clearing the height in his first attempt. Action on the track accounted for the remainder of Cloud County's action with
Siyabonga Mokgothu placing fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:02.41 after seeing both
Nichalas Power (1:48.89) and
Kamogelo Thipe (1:51.35) run qualified preliminary times in the 800 meters to advance to Saturday's finals.
Saturday Results:
Along with head track and field coach Harry Kitchener getting honored as United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association Central Region Coach of the Year, the T-Birds had three individual marks finish in the top-eight on the final day of competition led by a third-place finish from
Awakhiwe Ndlovu in the triple jump (15.28 meters, 50 ft. – 1.75 in.). Following up their qualifying times from Friday, Power took fifth in the 800 meter finals with a time of 1:49.52 while Thipe took eighth by running a time of 1:55.41. In addition to the events that led to scoring for CCCC, just outside the top eight were a trio of Cloud County athletes with
Jaren Aurand placing ninth in the javelin (53.87 meters, 176 ft. – 9 in.),
Oageng Mdlela taking ninth in the triple jump (14.94 meters, 49 ft. – 0.25 in.), and
Nirmit Dahiya placing ninth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:58.53.
