4x800 Relay School Record Highlights First Two Days For Cloud County Track At 2024 KU Relays

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Getting a school-record performance from the 4x800 meter relay team, the Cloud County Community College women's and men's track and field teams have made their way through the opening two days of the 2024 Kansas Relays held at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kansas on April 19th. 

The 101st rendition of the meet has featured two full days of action with both high school and collegiate events taking place as Thursday featured a limited number of events with Cloud County athletes while seeing Friday action begin to pick up with the number of events that CCCC has student-athletes competing in. 

Thursday Results:
Getting Five top-eight finishes from the T-Bird women and one top-eight finish from the T-Bird men, Cloud County was led by a third-place finish from Ozia Trujillo in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:46.33 in the distance carnival portion of the day while seeing N Vanee Anchike take sixth in the 5,000 meters with a time fo 17:30.88. The lone other track result to come as a top-eight finish was from Felix Surtan on the men's side in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, completing the event in 10:18.34 to take eighth out of 15 runners to finish the race. 

All remaining top marks on Thursday came across two events for CCCC on the women's side with the pole vault resulting in a trio of top-eight finishers to go along with two top-12 finishers in the hammer throw. The pole vault saw Jasmine Sakaguchi take third after clearing 3.35 meters (10 ft. - 11.7 5in.) while seeing both Elizabeth Dunham and Bradie Medina clear 3.05 meters (10 ft. - 0 in.) to finish in a tie for sixth. In the hammer throw, Margherita Sala had the best mark by Cloud County with a throw of 45.51 meters (149 ft. - 3 in.) to take 11th while finishing just ahead of teammate Tamara Thompson who recorded a mark of 45.45 meters (149 ft. - 1 in.). 

Friday Results:
The highlight of the first two days came right out of the gates for the T-Birds with the 4x800 meter relay team of Nontokozo Ncube, Mercy Angaamchaab, Anchike, and Jaelyn Rumback coming together to post the top-time in the NJCAA with a school-record performance of 9:03.69 to take another seven seconds off their time already run this season at the Friends University Spring Invitational. Adding an event win on the men's side as part of a one-two finish in the triple jump, Awakhiwe Ndlovu recorded a mark of 15.18 meters (49 ft. - 9.75 in.) to just beat out reigning Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference men's field Athlete of the Week Oageng Mdela who had a mark of 14.98 meters (49 ft. - 1.75 in.) to take second among the 22-competitor field. 

CCCC also got runner-up finishes from the men's distance medley relay team of Siyabonga Mokgothu, Corey Ottey, Kamogelo Thipe, and Nirmit Dahiya with a time of 10:15.72 and the men's 4x800 meter relay team (Ishmael Acheampong, Thipe, Andres Young, and Nichalas Power) with a time of 7:45.12. Other top marks from the T-Bird men included a trio of qualifying times in the hurdles with both Brandon Hutchinson (15.53 seconds) and Bradley Nkosi (15.57 seconds) qualifying for Saturday's 110-meter hurdle finals while Ifeanyichukwu Aninze qualified in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.46 seconds. The lone remaining top-10 finish from the Cloud County men on Friday saw Andre Smikle take seventh in the discus with a mark of 47.03 meters (154 ft. - 3 in.). 

Back to the T-Bird women, three additional top-10 marks were recorded with Adrienne Locke-Garcia taking seventh in the shot put (13.33 meters, 43 ft. - 8 in.) ahead of teammate Thompson who took 10th (12.14 meters, 39 ft. - 10 in.). Also recording a finish in the top 10 in her respective event was Cordaelia Williams in the high jump by taking ninth after clearing 1.50 meters (4 ft. - 11 in.). 

What's Next?
One final day in Lawrence will feature more T-Birds in action to close out the 2024 Kansas Relays as the T-Birds continue to make final preparations for the 2024 NJCAA Region VI Outdoor Track Championships. Following the KU Relays, CCCC will have one more weekend of action ahead of their first of two postseason meets taking place in the month of May.
