GARDEN CITY, Kan. – Behind seven NJCAA Region VI Championship performances and four new school records, the Cloud County Community College women's and men's track and field teams have both jumped out to day two leads heading into the final day of action at the 2022 Region VI Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Broncbuster Stadium in Garden City, Kansas on Friday, May 6th.
With five events scored in both the women's and men's team competitions, the Cloud County women hold an eight-point lead after scoring 41 points to get out in front of second-place Cowley (33 points) and third-place Fort Scott (29 points) while the T-Bird men also hold an eight-point lead over second-place Cowley after scoring 37 points to outpace the Tigers (29 points) and third-place Coffeyville (19 points).
Each side of the team competitions would start out with Region VI Championship performances from CCCC as sophomore
Andrew Betton would carry over day one action in the decathlon to finish the 10-event multi-event with 6,497 points while
Vanessa Mercera would earn a Region VI Championship in the heptathlon with 4,412 points. Betton's championship performance would include a multi-event best mark of 1.90 meters (6 ft. – 2.75 in.) in the high jump and pole vault (4.11 meters, 13 ft. – 5.75 in.). while finishing no worse in the bottom half of the field in just two of the 10 events to best the next-closest competitor by nearly 400 points. Mercera's title would come in closer fashion by edging out Deborah Lowe of Barton County by just over 100 total points as the native of Curacao would win the high jump (1.53 meters, 5 ft. – 0.25 in.) and shot put (9.99 meters, 32 ft. – 9.5 in.) while finishing in the top-three in the 100-meter hurdles, 200 meters, long jump, javelin, and 800 meters.
Also competing in the multi-event competitions for Cloud County on Thursday and Friday would include a third-place finish from
Anson Moses and eighth-place finish from
Deandre Elliot in the decathlon after finishing with 6,033 points and 5,436 points respectively while
Reanna Green would compete in the heptathlon for the first time as a T-Bird to take fourth with a total of 3,228 points.
Following the multi-events would be a Region VI title performance from
Hollie Stewart in the javelin (43.56 meters, 142 ft. -11 in.) to edge out teammate
Jessi Brummett who finished second with a mark of 43.14 meters (141 ft. – 6 in.) as well as
Vincent Ugwoke in the discus on the men's side (50.47 meters, 165 ft. – 7 in.). Other field events taking place in the early part of the third session would include a school-record mark and Region VI title from sophomore
Timothy Nyinguan after unleashing a monster jump of 8.08 meters (26 ft. – 6.25 in.) in the long jump in addition to a fourth-place finish from
Bradley Davies-Pughe (7.31 meters, 23 ft. – 11.75 in.) in the event.
Once things turned over to the track, the Cloud County women would shine with a Region VI title coming in the 4x800 meter relay from the team of
Ludjenie Mondesir,
Abigail Fisher,
Melody Ochana, and
Bailey Rock before seeing qualifying times and school records from
Isila Apkup in the 100-meter dash (11.66 seconds),
Miracle Thompson in the 100-meter hurdles (13.50 seconds), and
Vimbayi Maisvorewa in the 200 meters (23.76 seconds). The CCCC women would also be responsible for the final Region VI title won by the T-Birds on Friday as freshman
Lucy Ndungu would cap off the day with a title in the 10,000 meters with a time of 42:27.61 to win the event by nearly 11 seconds.
Other top-eight finishes from the Cloud County men on Friday would feature a third-place finish in the 4x800 meter relay team of
Rylan Cheney,
Quwayne Reid,
Cejay Morrison, and
Hassan Abidi while
Davis Mick would be the top finisher in the javelin for the T-Birds with a third place finish off a mark of 47.90 meters (157 ft. – 2 in.).
What's Next?
Plenty of action still awaits both the Cloud County women and men for Saturday as the 2022 Region VI Championships will conclude with final day action getting underway at 9:30 AM. Events where the T-Birds are expected to show well in include the men's hammer throw, the women's and men's pole vault, women's and men's triple jump, in addition to a number of events that are still to be run on the track once track events start at 12 PM.
