T-Bird Volleyball Sees Season End In NJCAA Plains District Tournament

Box Score OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Digging a 2-0 hole after a pair of closely contested sets to open the match, the Cloud County Community College volleyball team would see their season come to a conclusion on Friday afternoon with a three-set loss Kansas City Kansas Community College in the semifinal round of the NJCAA Plains District A Tournament on the campus of Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas on Friday, April 2nd.

The spring 2021 season comes to an end for CCCC with a 14-9 record and second-straight appearance in the Plains District Volleyball Tournament while the Blue Devils improved to 14-7 and will take on host Johnson County in the championship match with an NJCAA Division II Volleyball Tournament berth on the line.

Cloud County would play from behind for most of the opening set as the T-Birds would fall behind by scores of 3-1 and 5-3 before battling back with two straight points to tie the set up. KCKCC would manage to reclaim the lead in each instance as CCCC would force ties at 8-8, 11-11, and 12-12 but would be unable to grab a lead. With the score tied at 12-12, Kansas City Kansas would manage to score three of the next four as part of a run that would allow the Blue Devils to take an 18-14 lead that would force a Cloud County timeout. Out of the timeout, CCCC would manage to battle back to tie things up at 20-20, but five of the final seven points would be scored by KCKCC as the Blue Devils would grab an early match lead.

Things would play out in a similar fashion in the second set as Cloud County would take the first point of the set for a momentary lead as the set would become a back-and-forth affair. Neither tea m would hold more than a two-point lead in the opening 20 points of the set before seeing the Blue Devils manage to score three straight with the match tied at 9-9 to go up 12-9 and grab some breathing room. The T-Birds wouldn't be fazed however, managing to pull even at 14-14 and force a KCKCC timeout before taking their first lead since the 2-1 mark on a Lakyn Tenbrink and Geraldyn Palacios block to make it 16-15. Following the block, Kansas City Kansas would go on a 4-1 run to reclaim the lead at 19-17 as CCCC would eventually use a timeout trailing 21-18. Cloud County would manage to get back within a point at 21-20 on a Jaycee Burghart setter kill and then tie the set on an ensuing attack error from KCKCC, but give up the final four points of the set to the Blue Devils who would hold a commanding 2-0 lead heading to the third.

A rough start to the third would set the tone the rest of the way as KCKCC would score the first four points of the set and nine of the first 10 to grab a 9-1 lead and force Cloud County to use an early timeout. The T-Birds would manage to get back within six at 10-4, but KCKCC would go on to push their lead to double-digits at 17-6 and keep Cloud County from getting any closer than nine the rest of the way as the T-Birds would drop a 25-14 decision to see their season end.
