Cloud County Sweeps Monday Pair From Coffeyville, Southeast At Home

3/15/2021 9:52:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CONCORDIA, KAN. –Strong offensive performances would lead the Cloud County Community College volleyball team to 3-0 sweeps of Coffeyville Community College and Southeast Community College to finish their final home triangular of the season with a pair of wins inside Arley Bryant Gymnasium on Monday, March 15th.

Cloud County continues their recent streak going to have now won four straight and nine of their last 12 matches to move to 11-7 overall while improving to 9-7 in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play The Red Ravens drop both of their matches on Thursday to fall to 8-8 overall and 6-7 in the KJCCC while the Storm split their matches to move to 6-11 overall.

Against Coffeyville:
The first of two matches in two weeks between the T-Birds and Red Ravens would see CCCC turn a break a 9-9 opening set tie by taking advantage of two straight Coffeyville errors to grab an 11-9 lead as neither team would give an inch early on. A Delaney Herold kill would get the Red Ravens to burn their first timeout of the set as the T-Birds would score five of the next six out of the timeout to go up 19-13 and force Coffeyville to use their final timeout. The second timeout would prove to be what the Red Ravens would need as CCC would score three of the next four before seeing Cloud County end the set by scoring four of the final five points to take a 25-21 decision.

Three straight points to open the second set by the T-Birds would allow CCCC to jump out to an early 4-1 lead as Coffeyville would call an early timeout trailing 7-3. Things wouldn't get much better for the Red Ravens as Cloud County would extend their lead to 14-7 and to get Coffeyville to use yet another timeout. The T-Birds would then see the Red Ravens begin to flip momentum as CCC would go on a 6-1 run to force a Cloud County timeout with the margin back down to two at 15-13. Flipping the script with the timeout of their own, CCCC would get two quick points with a Herold kill and Riley Bontrager service ace as the T-Birds would score four of the next five to go back up by a score of 18-14.

In similar fashion to the opening set, Cloud County would split the first 18 points of the third set as neither team would be able to find a lead of more than two early on in the set. Following a Coffeyville service error, Cloud County would get a Geraldyn Palacios and Jaycee Burghart block as things would become all T-Birds as part of a 6-0 run that would put CCCC up 15-9. Coffeyville would end the run with a kill, but see the T-Birds respond with seven more points to go up 24-11 as the lead would be too much for the Red Ravens to overcome as Cloud County take the set 25-13 and the match in straight sets.

Both Palacios and Herold would finish with 11 kills each as the T-Birds would record a sizzling .429 attack percentage in the match. Palacios would record five assisted blocks while Herold had two service aces in the match.

Against Southeast:
Making the most of a near three-hour break between matches, Cloud County would come out the more refreshed and focused team in the opening set against the Storm as the T-Birds would race out to a 5-1 lead before forcing an SCC timeout at 9-4. Southeast would get back within four following a kill out of the timeout before seeing Stewart and Lizzy Pfortmiller team up for the three next three points of the set as the T-Bird offense would be firing on all cylinders in the set. CCCC would then force SCC to use their final timeout after taking a 20-12 lead as Bontrager would come back with two-straight service aces out of the timeout to allow the T-Birds to cruise to a 25-17 first set victory.

A complacent start to the second set from the T-Birds would see the Storm jump out to a 9-3 lead as the T-Birds would use their first timeout of the match. Cloud County would slowly battle their way back by scoring seven of the next nine points to get within one at 11-10 and force Southeast to use a timeout of their own. Despite the rally from CCCC, the Storm would keep the T-Birds from claiming their first lead of the set until a 4-0 run late in the set would allow Cloud County to go up 20-18. Things would then be back and forth over the next five points as the lead would be traded twice before seeing CCCC end the set with kills from Pfortmiller, Stewart, and Palacios along with a Storm attack error to escape with a 25-21 set victory.

Not wanting to risk anything in the third, Cloud County would jump out to a 7-0 lead to start the third to force a SCC timeout as the Storm would be unable to get anything to go their way early on. The T-Bird lead would grow to 13-4 and eventually to 19-8 as Southeast would not have an answer for the renewed focus being shown by CCCC. With the large lead in hand and just six points away from a match sweep, Cloud County would get a little bit of everything to end the match as Lakyn Tenbrink would record three-straight kills to kick off a 6-2 run to end the match and give the T-Birds a 25-10 set victory.

Another strong offensive performance would be led by a team-high 12 kills on 21 attacks from Tenbrink as the freshman would hit .428 for the match alongside Pfortmiller who would record a .466 attack percentage with nine kills. Burghart would go for 36 set assists and 16 digs for a double-double in the match while Bontrager would have a season-high three service aces.

What's Next?
Cloud County will hit the road for three of their final four matches of the regular-season beginning on Thursday, March 18th as the T-Birds will take on Neosho Community College at 6:30 PM in Chanute. The Panthers came back from a 0-2 deficit to knock off number-12 Highland Community College in five sets at home on Monday night and now sits at 10-6 overall and 9-5 in the KJCCC ahead of Thursday's match.
