Box Score 2 HIGHLAND, Kan. – Off to their best start in recent history, the Cloud County Community College volleyball team remained unbeaten in 2019 by taking a pair of 3-0 sweeps over Metropolitan Community College and the Ottawa University JV team on day one of the Highland Community College Tournament in Highland, Kansas on Friday, August 30th.
Now 6-0 to begin the year, CCCC has swept four of the six matches played this season and will look to stay unbeaten when they take the court again tomorrow for two more matches at the Highland Community College Tournament.
Against MCC:
The T-Birds would come out strong to open the day against the Wolves, earning set wins by scores of 25-14, 25-17, and 25-16. Freshman Emelys Martinez led the charge in the opening set by recording seven kills on nine attack attempts and would end up with 11 kills in the match on 23 total swings. Dayana Chara led all CCCC players in the match with 12 kills which included a perfect four-of-four performance in the second set and would also record five digs and one assisted block. Other top performers against Metropolitan CC for Cloud County included Riley Bontrager with 24 assists while Geraldyn Palacios recorded three service aces.
Against Ottawa JV:
The Braves would prove to be little trouble for CCCC with the T-Birds taking the match by scores of 25-10, 25-17, and 25-12 thanks in part to a complete team performance. Nine different players would record at least one kill for Cloud County in the match, with Palacios setting the tone with a match-high 15 kills and a .500 attack percentage. Martinez would take on a more defensive role in the nightcap, recording 13 digs and one assisted block while Jaycee Burghart had 25 set assists, four service aces, and four digs.
What's Next?
Matches against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M at 9 a.m. and Southwestern Iowa Community College at 3 p.m. will close out the weekend for the T-Birds as CCCC will look to finish the opening month of play unblemished. The second match against Southwestern Iowa will mark the second time this season that the T-Birds and Spartans will play each other, with Cloud County earning a straight-sets victory last weekend in Beatrice, Nebraska.
