Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Cloud County Community College baseball team split its Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) doubleheader with Barton Community College on Thursday, April 23 at Lee Doyen Field in Concordia, Kansas. The Cougars took game one, 17-15 in eight innings, before the T-Birds responded with a 9-8 victory in game two.

Cloud County (41-5, 22-4 KJCCC) trailed 6-1 midway through the fourth inning in game two. Freshman outfielder Kellan Burke led off the fourth with a solo shot to center field, while sophomore first baseman Luke Clayton later added a three-run home run to right field, scoring freshman designated hitter Nolan Green and sophomore second baseman Joey Marino, to trim the deficit to 6-5 at the end of the fourth.

After freshman pitcher Bradley Janes held the Cougars scoreless in the top half of the fifth inning, the T-Birds loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half of the frame. A sacrifice fly by Green scored redshirt freshman outfielder Simon Baker, tying the game at 6-6. Marino drew a one-out walk to reload the bases. Two batters later, sophomore catcher Vasya Seymour singled to left field to bring home Burke and sophomore short stop Lucas Laukkanen, giving Cloud County an 8-6 advantage.

Redshirt freshman outfielder Tanner Jacobson led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run to right-center field, extending Cloud County's lead to 9-6.

In the top of the seventh, Barton made it a one-run game at 9-8 after sophomore outfielder Hayden Oviatt scored on a passed ball and freshman outfielder Rhett Winchester doubled to score freshman pinch runner Karston Wall.

Freshman pitcher Jackson Fox managed to get redshirt sophomore first baseman Kyler Horsman to ground out to end the game and preserve the win.

Fox faced the final two batters, allowing no runs on one hit while earning his second save of the season. Janes captured the win, pitching one inning, allowing no hits and no runs while walking two and striking out one batter. Sophomore Sam Brummund also pitched in relief, throwing 1.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on one hit with two walks and three strikeouts.

Freshman Ian Razak started for the T-Birds, throwing the first four innings. Razak permitted five earned runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Burke, Clayton and Jacobson all homered and finished with two hit days. Clayton drove in a team-high three runs. Jacobson added a double and drove in a pair of runs. Burke scored twice and had one RBI.

Barton scored 13 unanswered runs to rally from an 11-2 deficit on their way to a 17-15 win in eight innings in game one.

The Cougars brought 12 batters to the plate and scored nine runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 11-11. Redshirt freshman short stop JJ Spafford registered a two-RBI single to left. Two Cloud County errors sandwiched around a RBI single by Winchester made it 11-7. Sophomore catcher Carter Helm roped a one-out RBI double to right field, while freshman designated hitter Micah McGavran capped the inning with a three-run home run to center field to knot the game.

Barton plated four more runs in the top half of the seventh. Helm belted a solo home run, Winchester added a RBI sacrifice fly, Horsman scored a run on a ground out, and sophomore third baseman Kyle Walker tallied a RBI double to right field.

Down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore third baseman Kaden Budke and Jacobson collected back-to-back singles before Baker drew a walk to load the bases. Burke then crushed a two-out grand slam to center field, tying the game again at 15-15.

McGavran led off the eighth inning with a double, later scoring on a RBI single to center field by redshirt freshman catcher Dalton Jorgensen. Oviatt, who reached on an infield single, scored on a passed ball to put Barton in front 17-15.

Marino drew a walk to start the bottom of the eighth. After Clayton flew out to deep left field, Seymour reached on a fielder's choice. Once again, the T-Birds found themselves down to their final out. Budke extended the inning by reaching on an error to put the tying runs on the bases. But redshirt freshman pitcher Jake Field was able to get Jacobson to pop out to end the contest.

The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for Cloud County, who erased an early 2-0 deficit by scoring two runs in the second, two runs in the third, two runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth to grab an 11-2 advantage. Clayton hit a two-run home to right field in the second. Baker laced a RBI triple to center field in the third, driving in Jacobson. Baker scored on the same play on a defensive overthrow at third base. Marino and Clayton hit back-to-back solo homers in the fourth. Green added a three-run home run in the fifth, while Jacobson had a two-RBI single to left field that same inning.

The T-Birds finished with 13 hits in the loss, including six extra-base hits highlighted by five home runs. Jacobson and Burke led the offense with three hits apiece. Burke drove in a team-high four runners, while Jacobson finished with two runs scored and two RBI. Green and Clayton both had three RBI. Clayton also scored three runs.

Freshman Gage Gannon took the loss on the mound, allowing two earned runs on three hits with one strikeout in one inning of action. Fox, freshman Jett Wahlmeier and sophomore Kai Rempel also saw time in relief.

Sophomore Stocton Timbrook threw five strong innings to start, permitting two earned runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Cloud County heads to Great Bend, Kansas on Friday, April 24 to conclude its four-game series with Barton. First pitch of the doubleheader will begin at 1 pm at Lawson-Biggs Field.
