Cloud County Baseball Team Takes Both Ends of a Doubleheader Over No. 12 Hutchinson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Cloud County Community College baseball team claimed two ranked wins at home against No. 12 Hutchinson Community College with 14-4 and 12-4 victories in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) play Thursday, April 2 at Lee Doyen Field in Concordia, Kansas.

The No. 4-ranked T-Birds (31-3, 16-2 KJCCC) have five wins against ranked opponents this season. The T-Birds and Blue Dragons will meet for two more games on Saturday, April 4, with first pitch scheduled for 1 pm from Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Cloud County opened the doubleheader with a 14-4 run-rule victory in six innings.

Sophomore catcher Vasya Seymour led the way offensively with a team-high three hits as part of Cloud County's 13-hit outburst. Seymour, who drilled one of four home runs for Cloud County in the game, scored three times and drove in a pair.

Freshmen Kellan Burke and Nolan Green and redshirt freshmen Evan Gunn and Tanner Jacobson each turned in multi-hit performances, while sophomore Joey Marino added a double and sophomore Lucas Laukkanen had a solo home run.

Sophomore Stocton Timbrook moved to 6-0 on the season after pitching his fifth complete game of the year, allowing four earned runs on nine hits with one walk while striking out four.

Cloud County jumped out to an early lead on a three-run home run by Burke that scored Laukkanen and redshirt freshman Sumon Baker in the bottom of the first.

Jacobson added a solo shot to right field in the bottom of the second inning.

The T-Birds added three more runs in the third. Green laced a two-out single to center, scoring Gunn. Jacobson delivered his second hit of the day, blasting a double off the wall in left field to drive in Seymour and Green, stretching the lead to 7-0.

Hutchinson got three runs back in the top of the fourth when redshirt sophomore Elias Duncan smacked a two-run home run to center field and sophomore Finn Hochstein belted a solo shot of his own.

Cloud County added another run in the fourth on a lead-off homer by Laukkanen.

The T-Birds pushed the lead back to seven with two more runs in the fifth. Seymour singled and later scored on a passed ball, while Green also singled before coming around to score on an errant throw to first base by Hutchinson.

Freshman Crus Huenfeld connected on a solo shot in the sixth for Hutchinson, but the T-Birds sealed the win in the bottom half of the inning with a four-run surge that pushed the margin to 10 and invoked the mercy rule. Baker drew a walk to lead-off the frame, before Burke drove him home on a double to left. Gunn scored Burke with a double of his own, while Seymour capped the scoring with a two-run home run to left field to complete the win.

Cloud County finished with eight extra-base hits in the victory.

The T-Birds picked up its fifth consecutive win over Hutchinson by taking them down 12-4 in nine innings in game two. Eight of Cloud County's nine batters reached base at least once, with six players recording two hits or more. Cloud County scored 12 runs on 15 hits while scoring in six of its eight offensive innings.

Hutchinson opened the scoring in the top of the first with a RBI double off the bat of redshirt freshman Jordan Kuhnau.

Cloud County would respond with one run in the bottom of the first and five more runs in the bottom of the second to jump out to a 6-1 lead.

Burke opened the scoring for the T-Birds with a RBI single, scoring sophomore Kaden Budke.

In the bottom of the second inning, Cloud County exploded for five runs. Seymour reached on an error and Green followed with a single to left. Jacobson drove in Seymour with a RBI single to left. Budke was hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases. Laukkanen singled through the right side of the field to score Green. Jacobson was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Baker. Burke and Marino then tallied back-to-back two-out singles to drive in Budke and Laukkanen.

Both teams were held without a run in the third and fourth innings.

The T-Birds would bring across single tallies in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Seymour delivered a RBI single in the fifth. Laukkanen belted his second home run of the doubleheader on a lead-off shot to open the sixth. Budke collected a RBI single to center field in the seventh.

Cloud County would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Marino launched a one-out solo home run to center field. Green singled to drive in Seymour, while a two-out double to left by Jacobson scored Green.

Seymour was 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Green also had three hits with two runs scored and a RBI. Jacobson had a pair of RBI on two hits, including a double. Marino drove in two runs on two hits, including a home run, while scoring once. Laukkanen homered, drove in two runs and scored twice. Burke also had two hits with two RBI, while Budke scored twice.

Freshman Ian Razak, the reigning KJCCC West Division Pitcher of the Week, got the start on the mound for the T-Birds, pitching six innings, allowing one earned run on eight hits with two walks while striking out five Blue Dragons. Razak has improved to 5-0 on the year.

Sophomore Kai Rempel pitched two innings in relief, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out one.
