Box Score The Cloud County Community College baseball team grabbed an early lead but faded late, falling 15-4 in seven innings at No. 5 Cowley College on Monday, March 24.
The T-Birds fall to 20-9 on the season with the loss. Cowley has improved to 20-5 with the win.
Redshirt freshman
Matthew Evans got the T-Birds off to a good start when he laid a bunt single down the first base line in the top of the first before scoring on an RBI single to center field by sophomore
Nolan Freund. Freshman
Joey Marino recorded a two-out RBI single to center to drive in Freund, extending Cloud County's lead to 2-0.
Sophomore
Noah Konings reached on an error and advanced to second to lead off the top of the second. Freshman
Tony Crow followed with an RBI single to center to push the T-Birds further in front at 3-0.
Cowley responded with six runs in the bottom half of the frame, highlighted by a three-run home run by freshman infielder Logan Smith. Smith added a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the third, while freshman Dax McCaskill drove in three runs on a double to left-center, giving the Tigers a 10-3 advantage.
Evans went deep for the second time this season with a solo homer to center field in the top of the fourth, but Cloud County couldn't quiet the Cowley College bats. A base-hit by freshman Drake Fittro scored freshman Tanner Fallwell, while sophomore Seth Dandrige had a bases-clearing double to center field to push Cowley's lead out to 14-4 at the end of the fourth.
Fittro collected another RBI on a ground out that scored freshman Logan Groh in the bottom of the sixth.
The Tigers ended the game with 12 hits, six for extra-bases, led by Smith who went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI. Groh was 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored. Dandrige was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI.
Offensively, Cloud County was led by Evans who went 3-for-4 with a home run and a double, one run scored and one RBI. Freund finished 2-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI. Crow and Marino each had a hit, while Konings added one run.
The T-Birds left nine on base and recorded seven hits in 28 at-bats.
Freshman
Evan Bogart started the game, going an inning and two-thirds where he allowed six earned runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore
Zach Sharshel pitched 2.1 innings and gave up eight earned runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore
Aaron Boutz faced three batters in the scoreless fifth. Sophomore
Tyler Elliott pitched the sixth, allowing one earned run on one hit.
Cloud County returns home to open a Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference series with Seward County Community College on Thursday, March 27. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 pm. Seward County is 14-17 overall and 1-7 in conference play.
