Morton College Results
MIAMI, Okla. – Facing off with two ranked foes as part of three total duals, the Cloud County Community College wrestling team would overcome defeats to Southeast Community College and fifth-ranked North Idaho College to earn a 44-12 win over 19th-ranked Morton College to conclude day one of the 2024 NJCAA Coaches Duals hosted inside the Student Activities Center on the campus of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in Miami, Oklahoma.
Cloud County's first dual of the day was a 40-14 defeat to the Bobcats of Southeast before dropping a 38-8 decision to fifth-ranked North Idaho in their second dual of the day. The final dual against Morton College would see the T-Birds win eight of the 10 matches with their two losses coming due to open weights at 149 pounds and 197 pounds.
Against Southeast CC:
Facing off against Southeast for the first time in program history, Cloud County got out to a 6-0 lead with an open weight forfeit at 125 pounds by the Bobcats before seeing SCC come back with 10th-ranked wrestler Lance Olberding at 133 pounds to earn an 18-3 technical fall over
Daniel Vines of CCCC to get back within a point at 6-5. Southeast took the lead in the next match as Ely Olberding at 141 pounds defeated
Collin Smith 19-4 before the T-Birds gave up the first of two open weight forfeits to SCC to trail 16-6 after four matches. Closing the gap with a win at 157 pounds, Cloud County saw
Dylan Ancheta take an 8-1 decision win over Nicholas Kuehn followed by a pair of falls for Southeast at both 165 pounds and 174 pounds. Trailing the dual 28-9, Cloud County earned their final match victory of the dual at 184 pounds with
Macallistair Chambers earning an 18-2 technical fall over Dustin Hurley before giving up an open weight forfeit at 197 pounds and second period fall at 285 pounds.
Against North Idaho:
One of three teams ranked in the top five of the latest NJCAA Wrestling Poll to compete at the duals this weekend, number five North Idaho proved to be as tough as advertised for Cloud County with the Cardinals taking each of the first five matches of the dual. Following a major decision at 125 pounds and fall at 133 pounds, NIC added a 5-4 decision at 141 pounds with
Collin Smith unable to hold on after going up 4-0 in the match as a second-period takedown was followed by a third-period reversal for Gaven Jolley to earn the win. Trailing 13-0, Cloud County gave up another six points with an open weight at 149 pounds and saw number-eight-ranked Porter Craig defeat
Dylan Ancheta 17-2 to make the score 24-0 in favor of NIC. The first of two Cloud County wins in the dual came at 165 pounds with
Easton Boone going up 6-1 after one period of action and never looking back as part of a 12-1 major decision win in his first action of the day with a bonus-point victory. North Idaho responded with a 7-0 win at 174 pounds before seeing
Wyatt Powell of CCCC earn an 11-2 major decision upset of fifth-ranked Noah Poe-Hatten by only giving up a reversal in the first period and never trailing in the match. Giving up another open weight at 197 pounds, the final match of the dual saw Cloud County's
Gavin Nutting fall to Shai Murray 19-3 to finish off the 30-point defeat to the Cardinals.
Against Morton College:
Looking to build momentum heading into tomorrow's action, Cloud County did just that in their final dual of the day as all eight wins by the T-Birds featured bonus points as Morton gave up one open weight victory at 141 pounds while seeing Cloud County be open at 149 pounds and 197 pounds. Of the seven contested matches, CCCC earned first-period falls by
Nolan Bradley at 125 pounds and Vines at 133 pounds followed by a technical fall win by Ancheta at 157 pounds (20-2). Leading the dual 23-6, Cloud County all but put the dual out of reach with the 165-pound match as Boone picked up his second bonus-point victory of the day with an 18-3 win that was followed by another technical fall coming from Chambers at 174 pounds (17-2). A first-period fall by Powell at 184 pounds gave Cloud County their third and final fall of the dual as the lone match remaining came at 285 pounds with Nutting ending his day with a 15-0 win over Jeremiah Pinder for his second dual win of the season.
What's Next?
Cloud County will wrestle in the consolation bracket on day two of the NJCAA Coaches Duals after finishing in third place in Pool B on day one of the two-day dual meet. Action is set to get underway at 9 AM on Saturday with Cloud County expected to face off against Otero Junior College as the Rattlers finished third in Pool C with a win over Iowa Lakes along with losses to Labette and host NEO. An official bracket will be put out later this evening following the conclusion of day one competition.
