CONCORDIA, Kan. - Nothing has come easy over the past week for the Cloud County Community College volleyball team, but the will and determination to never giving up showed through on Wednesday night as a 2-0 hole would be overcome to defeat Dodge City Community College in a five-set thriller inside Arley Bryant Gymnasium on Wednesday, October 18th.
The win for the T-Birds puts CCCC at 20-12 on the year along with a 6-8 mark in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference as Cloud County sweeps the season series from Dodge City who falls to 14-14 overall and 5-8 in the KJCCC.
Statistically, Cloud County would hit just .166 for the match with 23 attack errors being a problem throughout the night despite the Conquistadors not faring any better on the offensive end following a .127 attack percentage with 32 attack errors of their own. After allowing DC3 to .207 through the first two sets, the Conquistadors would never finish above a .096 attack percentage in any of the final three sets which accounted for 19 of their attack errors. The biggest difference in the contest and arguably a match-determining factor would come in the block department as 21 total blocks would see CCCC hold a 14-7 advantage over DC3 to overcome an 11-8 deficit in service aces that Dodge City would hold the advantage in.
Individually, double-digit kill efforts from sophomore
Doga Eski (16) and freshman
Bradie Medina (10) would lead the way for the T-Birds, each recording one service and accounting for two blocks. The trio of
Emery May (6),
Katelynn Brogan (5), and
Jacey Schurle (5) would all have big matches defensively in the block department with Brogan also helping out on the offensive end with a team-best 33 set assists along with two service aces. Five different T-Birds would record double-digits in the dig department, with sophomore
Brette Doile finishing with a team-high 20. Dodge City would get game-highs in kills (19) and digs (22) from Tess De Zanet while having three different players finish in double-digit kills to account for 45 of their 56 kills as a team.
What's Next?
One of the longest road trips of the season finally comes for the T-Birds on Saturday, October 21st as Cloud County will make the haul to southwest Kansas to take on Seward County in a 6:30 PM matchup from the Greenhouse in Liberal. A win on Saturday would come with some historical significance as CCCC has beaten the Saints just twice since the 2001 season with both wins coming in the past three seasons. Earlier this year, Cloud County defeated SCCC in four sets at home by scores of 27-25, 29-27, 23-25, and 25-13 on September 20th.
