#17 T-Bird Wrestling Goes 3-0 On Day Two Of NJCAA Coaches Duals To Finish Week 6-2

Colby Results | Snow Results | Clackamas Results

MIAMI, Okla. – Three more dual victories by the number-17 nationally-ranked Cloud County Community College wrestling team would lead to a consolation bracket championship at the 2023 NJCAA Coaches Duals inside the Student Activity Center on the campus of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in Miami, Oklahoma on Saturday, January 14th.

Bouncing back from two dual defeats to end day one of the two-day tournament on Friday, Cloud County improved their dual record to 7-3 overall as CCCC would earn a 47-12 victory over Colby Community College, 27-24 victory over 19th-ranked Snow College, and 35-17 victory over top-ranked Clackamas Community College for their second win over the Cougars in consecutive days.

Against Colby:
In a potential preview of a dual slated to take place on Tuesday, January 24th, Cloud County would have little trouble with Colby as the Trojans would give the T-Birds 30 points due to open weight classes at 125 pounds, 157 pounds, 165 pounds, 174 pounds, and 184 pounds. Of the contested matches, Bray Skinner (133 pounds) would turn a third-period reversal after choosing bottom position into a fall at the 5:20 mark of his match with Quentin Pauda while Ibrahim Ameer (197 pounds) would have little trouble with Jamar Toston to earn a 16-1 technical fall. CCCC would also get a fall from Emanuel Munoz-Alcala after leading 12-2 early in the second period and ending things at the 4:05 mark of his match. Colby's wins would come by fall at 141 pounds and 149 pounds with the T-Birds getting points from seven of the 10 weight classes.

Against Snow College:
Taking on first-year program Snow College in their second dual of the day, open weight classes would again prove to be crucial in a match as the Badgers would be unable to field a wrestler at the 125-pound and 141-pound weight classes. The 12-point cushion for Cloud County would allow the T-Birds to hold a 12-9 lead after four weight classes with Snow earning a decision victory at 133 pounds and fall in the 149-pound match before CCCC would get back in the win column with Dylan Ancheta turning a 10-0 first-period lead into a second-period fall with 12 seconds left in the period.

Snow College would then get an 11-6 decision at 165 pounds and first-period fall in the 174-pound match to tie the dual at 18-18 before giving up a second-period fall to Wyatt Powell (184 pounds) and a 7-1 decision victory from Ameer in the 197-pound weight class against seventh-ranked Christian Slack. With the dual victory and spot in the consolation bracket championship secured, CCCC would see the Badgers earn a first-period fall at 285 pounds to put the final margin of victory at three points.

Against Clackamas:
For the second-straight day, Cloud County would be set to take on the Cougars open weights at 133 pounds and 141 pounds giving the T-Birds a 12-point cushion to begin dual. Freshman Brady Foster would earn a 15-0 technical fall in his only action on the mat on the day to put CCCC up 17-0 through three weight classes with Clackamas managing to score a technical fall at 149 pounds and 3-2 decision in the 157-pound match to cut the deficit to nine at 17-8. Maurice Hilbert would manage to put another six points on the board for Cloud County with a second-period fall over Jacob Kessinger to offset a Cougar third-period fall in the 174-pound match with the margin still nine points with three weight classes remaining.

Securing a dual victory for the T-Birds would be Powell at 184 pounds with CCCC's second pin of the dual by ending his match with 24 seconds left in the first period before making way for the top-two ranked wrestlers at 197 pounds to battle for the second-straight day. With second-ranked Ameer having knocked off top-ranked Michael Gasper on Friday by a 3-2 decision, it would be Gasper who would get the best of Ameer on Saturday with a 2-0 decision victory by getting a second-period escape to go along with a riding time point. The final match of the day for Cloud County would be a successful one with Munoz-Alcala taking down Braden Pease with his second-straight pin by ending things at the 2:40 mark of his match.
