T-Birds rout Garden City, 11-0, to record third straight win

Box Score

CONCORDIA, Kansas — The Cloud County Community College women's soccer team rolled to an 11-0 victory over Garden City Community College on Friday, hammering a Lady Broncbusters team that came to Concordia winless on the season and with a roster whittled down to 11 able bodies.

Cloud County (5-2 overall, 4-1 KJCCC) peppered Garden City's goalkeeper Perla Enriquez with 29 shots on goal, while the Broncbusters (0-9 overall, 0-7 KJCCC) were limited to one shot.

"The women started a little slow, but the domination of the midfield with Abigail Conway, Angie Vergara, Joana Villanova, Katherine Rojas and Yasmidt Mendoza got us going," said Cloud County head coach, James Ross. "Our defense also did a great job (Friday) of not letting the ball bounce. Ingrid Castro and Hollie Johnston were rock solid back there."

The T-Birds put the game away early with six first-half goals, the first coming 7-minutes, 34-seconds into the game as Mendoza finished off a setup from Vergara.

Cloud was held off the scoreboard for the next 19 minutes, but then ended the first half with a flurry as Vergara scored off a penalty kick (26:56) — her first of two PK goals on Friday — while Barbosa (29:39), Villanova (34:29 and 42:31), and freshman Maryanne de Castro (44:14) all found the back of the net through the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, Conway was able to break through with a pair of goals after a frustrating first half that saw her scoring chances thwarted by Enriquez. Conway led all Cloud players with 10 shots, all of which were on goal.

Freshman midfielder Tatiana Suarez added a pair of second-half goals as well — the first two goals of her career at Cloud County — to polish off the rout.

Fellow freshman Janne Hamisi, who received her second start in net, recorded her first collegiate shutout as she stopped the lone scoring chance for Garden City.

With the win, Cloud County has not won three straight games as it heads into its road make-up game with Pratt Community College at 2 p.m. on Monday.
