Box Score CONCORDIA, Kan. – Seeing their 14-match win streak snapped, the number 18-ranked Cloud County Community College women's soccer team would see their season come to a close following a 2-1 upset by Johnson County Community College in the NJCAA Region VI Quarterfinals at the Cloud County Soccer Field in Concordia, Kansas on Saturday, October 26th.
The T-Birds see their season come to a close with a 14-3 overall record while the Cavaliers move on to next Thursday's NJCAA Region VI Playoffs semifinals against Kansas City Kansas Community College while improving to 12-6-1 overall.
Speed would play a factor early on as Johnson County would show a distinct advantage in being able to chase down balls in the open field and put pressure on the T-Birds, leading to a pair of early shots from the Cavaliers. After earning a corner kick in the 18th minute, JCCC would try to play the corner to the far side of the field before seeing the ball played back over which set up an opportunity to play the ball back to the far post and score to take an early 1-0 lead 18:58 into the game.
The rest of the first half would play out without either team being able to find another goal as both possession and pace would be held by the Cavaliers in the opening 45 minutes to put the T-Birds in a 1-0 hole for the second straight match. In the second half, Cloud County would begin to put more pressure on the Johnson County back line and fire off shots from distance to try and work the ball into the 18-yard box knowing that they would need an equalizer. The pressure would eventually pay off as a ball would be played in and sent across the box by Gabriela Vargas where it would find Franciele Cupertino to tie things up with just over 17 minutes left in regulation.
Things would not stay tied for long however as Johnson County would manage to maintain their composure and come back with a response at the 84 minute mark by playing a ball through the midfield to just outside the 18-yard box where it would be chased down by Kayla Brashear and kicked before a charging Thaynara Soares could get her hands on it to put the Cavaliers back up 2-1. With just six minutes to try and find a second equalizer, the T-Birds would be unable to do so as JCCC would play everything deep to kill off time and hang on for the one-goal upset.
JCCC would outshoot Cloud County by a 14-8 margin while also earning eight of the 10 corner kicks in the contest. The T-Birds would get two shots each from Izabella Christina and Cupertino while four other players had one shot each for CCCC. Soares would take the loss in the net for Cloud County, despite turning away five shots in the contest.
