Box Score

HESSTON, Kansas — The Cloud County Community College women's soccer team kept on rolling Thursday, rallying from an early 1-0 deficit to claim a 5-2 road victory over Hesston College.

The non-conference win marked the third straight victory for the T-Birds, who improved to 4-2 overall on the season.

Hesston College (6-4 overall) would strike first, scoring the game's first goal with 29:28 remaining in the first half on a second-chance opportunity.

The T-Birds answered back at the 39-minute mark of the first half as freshman Angie Vergara made the Larks pay for a poor clearing attempt. The midfielder corralled the loose ball and fired a missile from just outside the box to the top right corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

Vergara's score opened the floodgates as Cloud County took the lead for good less than four minutes later via a corner kick by Vergara headed in by freshman defenseman, Ingrid Castro. Her third goal of the season gave Cloud a 2-1 halftime advantage.

Following the break, the T-Birds added another pair of quick hitters in the second half to put the game away.

Freshman midfielder Katherine Rojas showed off her touch and leg strength at the 35:10 mark of the second half. Rojas boomed a kick from just inside midfield, perfectly placing the shot underneath the crossbar and above the outstretched hands of Hesston's goalkeeper.

Just 44 seconds of game clock later, Joana Villanova maneuvered her way past her defender and beat the Hesston goalkeeper with a shot to the far post for her first goal of the year to give Cloud County a 4-1 lead.

Freshman forward Maryanne de Castro, Cloud County's leading goal scorer with six on the season, concluded Thursday's scoring for the T-Birds with 1:14 remaining in the second half as she finished off a deep ball from Ingrid Castro.

Up next for Cloud County will be a 1 p.m. road contest against Pratt on Monday before returning home to face KJCCC West leaders, Hutchinson Community College, at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
