Barbosa's two goals lift T-Birds to 2-1 victory over Barton

Box Score
CONCORDIA, Kansas -- Freshman midfielder Maria Barbosa ensured a frustrating day for the Cloud County Community College women's soccer team concluded with a happy ending on Saturday in its 2-1 victory over Barton Community College.

Barbosa scored each of the two goals for Cloud County (3-2 overall, 3-1 KJCCC West), with the last coming with 4:36 remaining as she snuck a rebound opportunity past Barton  goalkeeper, Rayna Gonzalez.

The goal was a welcomed site for the T-Birds, who owned a 30-7 shot advantage over Barton (2-3-2 overall, 1-2-1 KJCCC West) on Saturday. Of Cloud's 30 shots, 15 were shots on goals, three shots hit the goal posts and another went off the crossbar.

"It was like Deja Vu from the Northwest Kansas Tech game," said Cloud County head coach James Ross, referencing the T-Birds' 3-2 overtime loss to the Mavericks on Tuesday despite a 20-10 shot advantage. "The girls are playing really good soccer right now, but we're struggling to finish off scoring chances and finish off teams early."

Barbosa's first goal came at the 32:07 mark of the first half as, following Angie Vergara's missle that bounced off the crossbar, Barbosa was able to stuff home the second-chance opportunity to give Cloud County the 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 until the 62nd-minute when Barton forward Sydney Sulzman had a shot of her own hit the crossbar. The ball shot straight down off the crossbar and bounced past the goal line before Cloud County freshman goalkeeper Alanya Hannigan could corrale it.

It was the lone blemish against Hannigan, who finished the afternoon with three saves.

Cloud County will look to build off the victory when it heads to Hesston Community College on Thursday. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
